1G stock shifter to a short shifter

Does anyone have the info on changing a stock 1gen shifter to a sort shifter, like I have heard that you can do some cutting and welding on the stock on to change it into a short shifter is this true?

I need instructions thanks.

that's one option or you can just swap out shifters.....I have a B&M short throw and I really like it......

With any shifter, you can cut a portion of the shaft out above the pivot point and then weld it back together, thus shortening the shaft above the pivot point. This will give you a shorter throw distance wise (the distance from 1st to 2nd will be shorter) however, it will not reduce the angle that the shifter travels trough, therefor, it is not a true short throw shifter. Most actual short shifters decrease the length of shaft above the pivot point, and also increase the length of shaft below the pivot point. This not only decreases the distance, but also the angle through which the shifter travels.

Welll... it will have an effect on the throw, but nothing like a short shift kit. If you cut out an inch, your throw will be shortened by whatever trig formula you'd use for that stuff (and which I'm not about to try and figure). It will also raise the effort a bit. Biggest payoff is that you could CHANGE TAPES OR CDS ON A DAMNED TRIP! (Proof for those who don't think it's a domestic car, I guess.)
