Okay, I read the VFAQ, I've searched this and other sites, I've seen it and seen it cut open, just what the devil is this thing _for_? Of all the stuff I've worked on, I've never run across one before these. I'm about to call RRE for their ss line, and have no qualm about bypassing the thing, but what's it supposed to _do_?

From ACT's website

For Second Generation ‘95-99 – 1st – These cars have an accumulator cylinder that operates between the master cylinder and the slave cylinder which is designed to reduce feedback to the driver and therefore increases travel requirements. Consider bypassing this device to decrease the travel requirements and give the driver more feedback.

basically its to ease the operation of pushing the clutch in. Even though it is hydraulic

Bizarre. Yeh, it's hydraulic, it won't compress, it won't.... bizarre. Well, it's sure as hell counterintuitive, if that's what it's doing. Guess I'll find out when I get an RRE line in there instead. I remain, Frank Lee Baffled.

If you are going to remove your ecumulator you should also know there is a rubber ring in the master cylinder that slows your fluid down and it can be removed for faster engagment of the clutch. you will see it as soon as U flush the system. There is also a " widget" inside the bleeder on the slave, if you unscrew the bleeder you will see this "widget" with a small hole in it, you can remove the "widget" , the valve plate that it sits on and the valve plate spring. This made a huge difference in engagement with a ACT 2100 in a 95 talon tsi.

I'm just running a stock clutch, nothing extra-duty. I just did the slave cylinder, the new one didn't have the restrictor under the banjo bolt, but I put it in from the old one. The old one also had only one cup on the piston, the new one (Raybestos, fine Chinese-made) has a dual-cup piston. The old one (probably original, 70K miles) had a green piston, I ran across someone mentioning there's also a "red" piston version.
Cripes, it's just a clutch system, what's all the crap for?
I don't drag, so the faster-engagement part of the task isn't my goal.
I've not been into the master cylinder yet, it's still happy. And so am I, but I do plan on seeing if that accumulator will float in the nearest pond.

The diff's between the "colors" Is the bore size of the slave cylinder. Ther is suposdly a diff between the n/t, turbo, and the AWD. Atleast on the 1G's. I personaly have had three different sizes on all of mine!! But none of them seemed to be on the one the parts book specified them for!?!

Steve. :D

The one that came out and the new one were both 13/16". Which makes me wonder where the box went that just had cups in it that we always had at the garages I used to work at. Sigh. My 1G is still doing okay, no idea what it's got in its snout- 130K.
