I just bought a 93 talon tsi awd, The kid i bought it from was an idiot and swapped in a six bolt engine and tranny and trans case I assume and overlooked several items I want to clear up. The tenth digit of my transmission code is M from a 1991 model year. I also inspected the oil pan to confirm his claim of a six bolt swap it indeed has a bump out on the front of the pan. Front begin looking from the driver's side directly at the portion of the pan underneath where the crank pulley connects to the crank. I bought the car with a shot tranny and upon further inspection I started to encounter some issues
First off the car has its O.E cabin shifter assy and shift cables I assume from a 93. As well the linkage mount on the tranny is the parallel style probably the O.E piece. He said he drove the car for tens of thousands of miles with the car how it was. I had a few of my friends confirm his claim who physically knew him where as I did not. From what I have read/learned not using the correct cabin shift assy and linkage and trans mounts will net you a few missing gear selection's and overall sub par shift's. I assume I am correct in saying he should have swapped these items when he swapped in the 6 bolt?
Can I use a 23 spline transmission in my six bolt as long as I switch the output shaft from the transmission to trans case with a 22 spline unit? Is that it or what. Do i need to go ahead and try to find a 23 spline transfer case as well. I have a 4 bolt rear if that helps.
In conclusion will the fact that he replaced the ecu with an O.E piece not a 91 ecu cause any harm, The car has stock 450's a real mhi big 16g atmos dump 02 full 3" exhaust walbro 255 rewired correctly I checked it twice, Fll fmic with 2.5 piping and some other stuff, I have driven the car prob 200 miles already and it runs fine besides the suck transmission. The car obv runs out of fuel if it creep's up to 15 psi but it pulls strong and runs strong. I dont know if the engine needs a ECU from a 91 in other words like i said it fires right up idles nice runs good except the butt tranny. Any help would be great.
After making a few phone calls to dogdox, dsm graveyard, and mitsubishi graveyard I came up with a few key point's, 85% of the cars after 4 or 5 of the 91 model and 100% after have a 23 spline shaft, The only key differences between the pre 92.5 tranny and post are, 22 spline shaft is slightly weaker, the post 92.5 have a factory double syncro second gear, the post 92.5's also had slightly stronger rail's/ gear set's and something like a 5 or 6 % taller final drive. The conversion from 22 to 23 splines takes a matter of seconds you remove your 22 spline and put in your 23 spline shaft. @ most you will need to replace the snap ring and maybe just maybe take about a 1000th off the end of the shaft going into the tranny. A call to napa " It will take about sixty seconds and cost you 10 dollar's with tax". " That includes a new snap ring and the machine work" . To run a 90 tranny requires the conversion of your cable mounts and the cabin shifter assy. Any thing after 90 with a few exceptions will not need to be touched. The tranny on the car is just an old POS and it's time came to fail and it did just that. I hope this helps some one some day some how.
