5th gear on and off throttle = shifter moves

I noticed today that when I let off the throttle in 5th gear the shifter moves foward slightly and when I push the throttle back down it moves back to where it was. It is only moving 1/2" inch or so but I was just wondering if this is normal or not. I have never noticed it before and it just seemed odd, thanks for any insight someone may be able to share.

It's a common problem. If the VFAQ was up there is something on there that fixes that. Two bolts on the tranny need to be tightened up.

Do you happen to know which 2? I swapped my tranny about 10 months ago so I know all the bolts.

well if that doesnt scare me I dont know what will, thanks though I need to adress this issue.

Take off the passenger side tire, drain your tranny fluid, take off the side cover, its 6 12mm bolts, inside you will see your 5th gear, it is held on with a 36mm bold, give it a quick tighten and replace the cover and the tranny fluid, and there ya go.

Awhile back I had my tranny taken apart at a local shop to see what all was messed up ( considering I had no 2nd gear ). They quoted me $1900 to rebuild it. I told them to put it back together and put a new clutch on it since the one on it was shot. I then drove it from Va Beach to Mississippi to have my dad try and sell it while I was on deployment. Well...3/4's the way down there my stick started doing that in 5th gear. I ignored and told my dad about it. He drove it to work and back till one day about a mile from the house he heard a loud slam up under the car. He knew there was nothing in the road so he couldn't have hit anything. He looked in the rearview to see 5th gear following him down the road. I just thought I'd share that with ya. But yeah...long story short...get that fixed fast!

i *believe* that problem only applies to fifth gear. some very minor movement in other gears with the gas pedal seems to be normal, i'd imagine its caused by the shifter cables moving slightly as the engine tilts with throttle application

The 2 bolt tightening inside the tranny should fix it in all the gears.
Make sure it's in reverse when you do it. I took an impact wrench to them... Shifter used to move almost a full inch in 5th gear, and it kept moving around in 4th and popping out.. 1st it moved a bit.. I tightened the bolts, and virtually all of the "noticeable" movement ceased to exist.

Is it really that easy to fix?

Because my shifter in 5th gear started moving around over the past couple months too. I had the clutch replaced 1 year ago so why would that nut loosen up in that amount of time? Any tips on doing just job for FWD 1g turbo is appreciated :thumb:

Hate to break it to ya but he hasn't been online in 9 years LOL. Damn this thread is old.

I had a big problem with my shifter moving around, the bolts that hold the bracket to the tranny for the shift linkage kept backing out. Eventually it took green loctite to hold them in properly...not sure why they were backing out so easily.

Ok now I'm confused. Mine only does it in 5th gear and from what I read you need to open the tranny and tighten a nut that holds 5th gear on.

Can anyone else comment on this?

mine moves in 4th really bad. but my motor and trans mounts are shot... all gears kind of move could this be caused by mounts or should i tighten those bolts. and does anyone have a link to pictures on how to do what 91bomb explained??

i mean tdminc
