Tightening up a loose 2G shifter?
Ever since I've had my car, there's been quite a bit of horizontal play in the shifter when in gear. I have an eBay B&M, Symborski Shift Kit, and have tightened every nut and bolt I could find. My cables are also pretty well adjusted.
What it looks like is that there is a "U" shaped bushing at the very bottom of the shifter setup that may be worn out. Does anybody know the part number for this? Has anybody replaced it and noticed a difference?

The "U bushing" is proubably positioned wrong. Take it apart, the bushing is suppose to fit on the shifter then slide in the the holder...I had the same problem...I also tightend the crap out of the big bolt on the upper right side of the photo...that reduced alot of play...hope that helps

Side to side shifter play - Looking for part numbers
I've yet to take a gander, but this should help.
Everything on my car is tightened and I have solid bushings as well as the bearing mod for the cable ends. I'm 99% sure that my nylon cup/pivot thingey is the culprit - and may be yours too.
EDIT: I've read of one other member who solved his issues this way.

Thanks so much man...that's exactly what I was looking for. Haha, we posted our threads at almost the same time too
I just ordered "24594D - MB307949 - Gearshift linkage bushing" from JNZ tuning (along with a few other parts...I felt bad only spending $0.60!)
I'll post up the results in about a week once the part arrives.

The tiny bushing came today and it helped slightly... I believe I got the gearbox as tight as a Mitsu can get
But I do have one problem now...
I didn't realize this until I tried to put back on the console, but the pivot piece I have is not stock...I guess it came with the previous owner's short shifter. This makes my (fake) B&M sit way too far to the left.
It looks like I need #24437 ... Is that correct? What part number would that be?

I did a few things to remove the excess horizontal slop too. With my horizontal movement, I found that the pivot bracket area was my issue. I added nylon washers on either side of the spring, added a little more tension by pushing the spring hands closer to each other (it used to have gaps between the arms and the piece that it rests on), tightened the nut on the rod as tight as possible too, nylon washer on one side of the vertical linkage (this one helped out a lot), tranny bushings, and the shifter base has one year old stock bushings. That's all I can think of atm. All in all, I have about 1/4" play on the handle itself, but you have to make it move by adding some force and the stock rubber bushings aren't causing the movements either. Before, all you had to do was flick it with one finger and it would move around as if it didn't have tension on it.
I think that's about as much play as I can remove without making the shifter too stiff.

Great tips . I'll try them out.
I'm determined to get my shifter feeling at least half decent after driving my buddy's S2000

24437 - MB870379 - Gearshift link lever - $25.21
24565B - MB910176 - Gearshift link collar - $4.36
24594B - MB829013 - Gearshift link bushing - $1.47
The Symborski shift kit comes with a better version of MB910176, so at least that shouldn't be needed. Both MB829013 should have been reinstalled so I doubt you need them either.

Honestly, I never knew my car could shift this nice! If anybody has a short shifter that replaces the stock lever, I strongly suggest replacing it with a B&M clone and a stock lever. Along with new bushings and hardware, this thing shifts as good as my buddy's S2000.
The main 'problem' that was causing the sloppiness was that the pivot piece on the aftermarket lever didn't match up perfectly with the bushing -- causing a lot of side to side play.
Thanks for all the help dudes.

My experiences exactly. It was only partially that little cup bushing and mostly the sloppy aftermarket shifter. I installed the new cup and tightened everything up and while I can't say it shifts like an s2000 - it is damn nice.
