The coiled spring was used only on the turbo cars. Why, I don't know. It's not a very good design IMHO.
I cut the coil spring pocket off to get better access to the clutch adjustment, and put a straight tension spring from the pedal up to some small holes in the brace under the dash, like the n/a cars do. Now the pedal comes all the way up every time, unlike what happens sometimes with the coil.
I've been driving on it for over 5 years this way. No problems.
