No 1st gear

Hey i just bought a 92 tsi awd with 79k miles for 950 bucks. the car is in amazing shape, but it has no 1st gear. It will go into 1st but as i slowly release preasure on the clutch the car will start to move, grind, and then pop out of gear. I have no idea???? Do you guys have any ideas or how much it should cost to repair?

thanks for the help

It sounds like the dog engagement teeth on the 1st gear itself are completely worn out. You should look at doing a basic rebuild, along with replacing 1st gear, 1/2 hub and slider, 1/2 shift fork, and all of the synchros.

Expect around $1000 for a normal price for a "Stage 1" plus the extra parts.
