Tranny was rebuilt around 50k ago. It almost sounds like what you would hear if the TOB is going bad, but its not the TOB because it doesn't stop when the clutch is depressed. It almost sounds like a faint air leak or something of the sort. It does it in all the gears. Now say I am in 1st or 3rd or 5th, if I firmly press the shifter all the way forward and hold it, the sound stops. If I apply pressure up or down depending on which gear I am in, the noise disappears. Any ideas?

I wouldn't be shocked if your tapered roller bearings are worn out on the intermediate shaft or the input shaft, or there is excessive lash on the bearings. I would reccomend having it disassembled by a professional before having it get worse.

Good luck,

Good luck,

Are those something I could tackle after getting the tranny out?

You will need the transmission out, and rebuilt by a professional. It isn't for just a backyard mechanic with normal tools. It does require some specialty tools to do a rebuild properly.

If you aren't a seasoned mechanic, I would really reccomend shipping it to a professional like Shep Trans, TRE, or Jacks Transmissions. They are all very capable shops that do this for a living.

Ah I didn't know if just those bearings could be replaced or if it had to be rebuilt. If thats the case I'll let it go for awhile and just pick up a used tranny.

My car does that to. It sounds like a little faint scratching noise correct???

If you are going to wait it out, then I would at least reccomend changing your gear oil and checking the drain magnet for debris, and gear oil for debris.

Also, it will be cheaper to fix it now, than to replace it once it blows up.
