Okay, I have been searching the site and all the threads I have read lead me to believe my throwout bearing is gone. I have a few questions: one, how much is an average replacement including labor? Two, should I do anything else while I'm getting that replaced? And three, I am supposed to race an Integra in 3 days for $$$$, what exactly does the throwout bearing do and would you recommend racing him? Thanks for the help. Jake

God damn street racers. :p

Well usally when a relese bearing goes. When the clutch is engaged it will make a whinning sound. but when you push the clutch in it will go away. Is this what is happening?

When you push the clutch in. Threw the wonders of hydrolics. A slave cylinder pushes out a small pistion. This inturns pushs on the release fork. The relese bearing (or throw out) is attached to the fork. The bearing is one the input shaft of the tranny. So when the fork push's on the bearing it slides forward on the input shaft of the tranny. The bearing when sliding forward on the input shaft, then pushs on the fingers of the presure plate. When the fingers are pushed in it release's the diaphram on the pressure plate. This then dis-engages the clutch.

Sorry for the long explination. but now you have a idea of how everything works. As for how much its gonna cost. Well they have to drop the tranny which takes time. So what ever the shop rate is in your area. times it buy about 3.5 maybe 4. The bearing itself is only like 30 bux cnd. As for racing, well if you must im sure you will cool for one more unless the bearing is whinning like a pig.

Alright so that is going to be somewhat expensive fix. Should I upgrade the tranny while it's out so I don't have to have it taken out, put back in and then taken out again to upgrade everyone when it goes. It's still the stock tranny going on 100,000 miles. I bought the car used so I have no idea how bad/hard it was driven before so I try to be pretty careful with it, regardless though, things are starting to go. It's getting very notchy, some new fluid would help that but the occasional grind into second gear isn't great either. So ideas on what to get, where to get it, links, anything that would help me out. I'm undecided to if I should just do a flush/fill on the transmission and race him and hope for the best or hold off until I get everything (throwout bearing, new fluid, new syncros, whatever is needed). Thanks for the help. Jake

well, are you talking about re-build or race build? If you ahve the money i would beef up the tranny if your going to be racing alot. But it's not to cheap. I would atleast either but in a 4 spyder gear center diff or weld it. If you have the bling bling then put in a kazz center diff.

I'm going for a build up that can handle high horsepower application but is alright for daily driving. I have yet to make any power adding mods so I'm just trying to make some pre-emptive upgrades so I don't end up with a 400 hp engine and stock transmission and clutch that I would blow right through and end up with long repair down time and lead to other costly repairs. No I don't really have alot of bling bling, I'm working for minimum at a movie theater (I'm 17). I'm basically just been saving for the past 3 months, building up some money to upgrade and be prepared for the upcoming race season. It's going to be my first season and I want to have money to fix/upgrade when necessary. So, thanks again for the help. Jake

Well with these car's. You will need a lot o money to fix ;)

Will then, i would say put in a ACT 2600 presure plate, with the street disk. 400usd (use a stock release bearing unstead of the ACT one)

while the tranny is out you could replace the sincro's, and what ever else needs to be replaced. (Tranny shop will know)

But the biggest thing you need to do is upgrade the center diff. Either Weld it. (Cheap and you wont break it, Not the best street abillity) Or put in a 4 spyder center diff(Hold's more power then stock. how much i dont know. Can still break though. Better street abillity then welded) Last off, replace it will a expensive one like kaaz. (much stronger, good street abillity, but cost's alot)

Isn't a center diff. for awd only? I was considering just sending the whole transmission off to TRE and having them set me up with the best stuff they got. Thanks for the help. Jake

my bad. I thought you had AWD. Well yah if you have the money for TRE to build the tranny, then do it. you might wan to get the 2100 presure plate then to. sorry for the confusion

No problem with the confusion, it happens, I was just making sure. Thanks. Jake
