I was making some good power in third gear a few minutes ago and then all the sudden BAM!! I'm in neutral, or so i thought. I couldn't get the shifter out of third to save me, and when i did it was hard to get into third and fourth and neither of those gears worked, all i have is 1st, 2nd 5th and Reverse.

Anyone speculate as to what let loose?

My main question is, if anyone knows what happened, can i fix this with a few parts or is it new tranny time? I have to have my car running for the 19th of this month or i could lose my job. If i need a new tranny who is the fastest shipper and better price. Id rather get it faster than get it cheaper to an extent.

Please help!

On the plus side, the car was pulling harder than ever at the point of when the turbo had just spooled (about 4500 or so is when she let loose and i was being held back pretty good in my seat:D )
 
Also, Jacks Transmissions is in colorado springs and i'm in omaha ( about 9 hours away) Do they ship pretty fast when you buy from them? I HAVE to have this car running by next weekend, or i might be jobless!
 
Well with your car's performance I'd say do a transmission rebuilt. It will be cheaper and better suited for performance. As far as that goes, I don't know he fast the turn-around time is at Jacks Transmission for rebuilt transmission but Shepherd and TRE usually takes a couple weeks. However TRE is offering to an exchange where they'll ship the rebuilt transmission out to you and you ship your old transmission back afterward but I don't how fast that can get it to you.
 
Anyone know what commonly causes this? It's held more power than this on slicks at the track and never broke. IT was just pulling really hard and tehn let go. I'm trying to figure out if it was a fork that just straight up bent since i could barely move the shifter till i used 2 hands to break it lose. And this was a light pull that was a roll on from a very low RPM.. i'm scratching myu head as to what went wrong.

Also, i found a tranny locally that i can get for 150 that ha a bad case and bad diff, but the gears are good ( this sounds a bit high to me for a blown tranny) but i could take the entire gear clusters and forks/slider assemblies out and slap them in my cases in i can't get one of jack's units in time. It's either that or a junk yard tranny and who knows what you get with that..believe me i managed one of the bettersones accross the nation called LKQ, owned by blockbuster. and as long as they shifter while the car was in teh air on a lift, they "passed" as good with a 6 month warranty, but no labor on that waarranty. ;(
 
Glenn, you are better off calling Jack and seeing what his turnaround time is right now; if you get it out, and shipped to him quickly/properly, stuff like this can be fixed and shipped in a day or two if he is not busy. He is a nice guy to deal with on the phone -- call him.

As for the tranny, don't just swap a used gearset/parts into your transmission -- that is not a smart idea. You are much better off getting it rebuilt properly and having everything checked/cleaned properly.

As for the breakage, you probably shattered the 3/4 hub/slider assembly, and shredded the blocker rings on 3rd and 4th gears. Your 3/4 fork is likely garbage.

The parts aren't that bad; unless you trashed your intermediate shaft also.

Look at the following:
Intermediate shaft $275
3rd/4th gears $160
3rd/4th synchros $35
3/4 shift fork $30
3/4 hub/slider with new keys and springs $135
Input shaft outer tapered roller bearing/race $31
Roll pins 1.00 each
End Shaft Nuts $6.00 each

Those are dealer list prices; it depends then on your discount from those prices. You are better off going through Jack, or TRE or shep, since they are able to have better prices; as well as the knowledge to pull apart/rebuild/inspect a trans very quickly.

I don't have CAPS up right now, so I don't have the part numbers available for the FWD stuff. I only have AWD stuff databased, since those are the ones I rebuild for people.

If you are going to do it yourself, you will need some specialty tools and an air compressor with a good impact gun.

Overall, it isn't too terrible to do, but if you want it done right, it is worth the extra money, less downtime, etc. -- especially if your job depends on it.
 
Not sure what specialty tools i'd need, but i have a complete shp of air tools and a HUGE compressor
 
Yea, Shep's too expensive, Jack's is close, i've heard good things about them and hopefully they can get me a tranny faster than i could from shep. Honestly renting a car while i waited would cost me more than driving to Colorado springs and picking up one of his base rebuids. I've already got some one willing to go with me that knows that town real well because he grew up there. So if i can get ahold of jack before he opens at 2:30 on tuesday my time, i'm going to drive there, get a trans and drive home.

I'm just wondering if this was a fluke thing, or if i'd be okay to get a bone yard tranny while i wait to build the one i really want from jack's palce (the premium build).

Is there a certain range where stock trannies just start spitting out gears under load? I've only ever seen them break 2nd on hard shifts and diffs on wheel hopping launches. What are my chances with a used unit? Wil it just do the same thing next time i lay into third?
 
Email Jack and ask him about what you would need for a nice tranny. I know he is starting to convert AWD trannys into FWD tranny because they use a lot better components. Since you have a FWD your tranny will last a little longer since your not launching it and killing CD's.
 
Well, the old tranny is out. Did it in under 2 hours. Now when i get teh energy i'll pull it apart and see what actually broke! I've Emailed Jack adn left him a messege. but if i can't get shold of him till late tuesday im going to need to line up at least a used OEM one if he can't get me the new one in time.
 
Well, I've always wanted a TRE stage 2 trany build, so this morning after finding no used units in the midwest period I broke down and bought what i really wanted anyway (thank god he had a core to build one from or i'd be screwed) I got the stage 2 TRE trans with Quaiffe LSD coming my way. Should be here Friday. Jon is a great guy and i helped get his dad some motorcycle parts for a vintage Kawasaki restoration 8 years ago and thankfully he remembered me and took good care of me.

I shall be putting the power down to both wheels with NO worries by the weekend(i hope). But then i have to start back to 60+ hour weeks on Tuesday the 19th, so I'll only have 2 days to play with the tranny before it becomes a point A to point B vehicle again for a while.

with this tranny and everythign else, i think my consistant low 12's are turning into consistant mid 11's, but I mainly just wanted booted off for going 11.xx with no cage...then when i decide to cage it up il go back and try for a quicker ET. Until then it will just be one wicked street warrior :D
