Alright i been throwing around the idea of converting my car from a GST to a GSX... knowing how hard it is to find a GSX makes me wanna do this.... I know it would be A LOT of custom work but im up to the challange... i would first start out the process by ordering a TRE full built GSX transmission that would bolt up to my engine... then buy brand new rear drivetrain assembly for it and some custom rear suspention work... id go independant rear suspension seeing how my car is stock without independant rear... that was a dissapointment to me :( o well i noticed id also have to cut out my spare tire holder and just fill that in with somethign.. id probably do some tube chassis work there to make the rear gear box fit there. moneys not really an issue right now... as soon as spring breaks ill have more than enough $$ to do this setup. i dunno exactly what im gonna do... i need some input here... anyone think this idea would be tight??? i know i can do it.. i have access to pretty much every machine tool possible.. let me know what you guys think. by the way... i love custom projects..... anyone who knows what im doing to my front end should know this haha

i email RRE and this was Mike W.'s response:
As far as cost, mostly depends on how much you pay for all the used parts. You need:

We charge $2000 for the labor. We do not sell or stock the parts. You need to track them down your self and decide how much you want to pay for lower mileage cleaner parts.

Parts Needed:

AWD Tranny

Transfer Case

AWD Flywheel

AWD Flywheel backing plate

AWD Front axle Assy's (must be from the same year car)

Driveshaft Assy

Fuel tank assy with the complete filler neck assy

Rear Suspension Assy

A little fabrication is necessary on the center tunnel. The middle drive shaft carrier location/stiffener is there but no studs. You just have to add studs. The rear bearing carrier location is missing. You need to fabricate a drop down box and studs. The mounting for the gas tank is different. You need to cut off the FWD mounting brackets and add studs to mount the AWD tank. All the fuel pump wiring colors are the same. The front end of the car is all the same. The rear frame rails were the most work. The rear two big studs for the rear suspension crossmember are in the right spot but they are too short. You need to cut through the tuunk and into the top of the frame rail to drop longe bolts down into the fram rails. The front studs are too short and need to be moved forward some. We make a new mounting pad for them. Still, not a deal breaker at all, just some surgery.

Instructions:

Sell GST
Buy GSX
Watch me fu@k your mom

If you want AWD that bad then buy one. Or just live with FWD. It's not that bad. Or is it? I don't know, I bought an AWD.

its not that easy to find a 1st gen GSX.. and FWD is that bad... waaaaaay to much wheel hop.. it sucks... o yes... since im not gonna sell my gst and buy a gsx... can u just do step 3 for my own pleasure?

Okay. First stretch her inner labias out and measure them, they cannot be longer than 1". Also, I must be able to get two Louisville Sluggers up there. Plus one in her anus. Test and make sure this is possible.

I expect all results back by noon tomorrow. Zulu.

:D

The question was already answered quite well. I was having fun being a post whore. Is that not allowed? I see lots of other people do it.

Batman, i always find your comments hilarious and well worth reading. Let us know how it works out for you.

I have been considering this myself, but on a 2G. My understanding is to convert a 1g to AWD is much more difficult than a 2G and definately not worth the effort.

The email from Mike W that "DSM mechanix" posted is for a 2G. The 1g is much more complicated.

Here is a response from Mike W. reguarding a 1g.

You need :
Tranny
Tranny mount and bracket
Front motor mount and bracket
3 front cross members
Main suspension cross member
Rear motor mount and bracket
Steering column
Flywheel and backing plate
Drive shaft and bearings
Entire rear suspension, disc to disc
Rear brake lines
E-brake lines
Gas tank assy and brackets
Fuel pump assy
Rear shocks
Front steering knuckles
Entire exhaust system

Probably a lot more stuff I am forgetting. Besides changing 1/2 the parts on the car, the major fabrication hassles were building the front mounts for the rear suspension crossmember, modifying the front frame rails for the crossmember, and moving the rear upper shock mounting locations back about 2 inches

I was going to convert my 99 spyder GS into a GSX spyder. Till I realized its nearly silly to do it unless you have money falling out of your ass.

I sold my non turbo
bought a 95 gsx and made money off the deal ;)

My wheels havent hopped since. :)

i dont kno wats wrong with your fwd cars if u buy some reall good tires trust me you woundnt feel a difference in awd and fwd trust me i kno i had the best of both worlds and i would rather stay with fwd making people think its awd wen its really fwd cant get beter then that

use autotrader.com to find a gsx somewhere in the US or get a dealer to find one for you.

say you found one on the east coast, it would be cheaper for you to fly there and drive the car back then to convert to awd.

much quicker also

Well now that I've read this about fwd to awd I'll sell the turbo gs. Great information guys.

You must be joking, or have had 2 relatively stock cars. Above 300whp, without slicks, you're GUARNTEED to get wheelspin if you launch relatively high in the RPM band. Don't give people the wrong idea, you simply cannot cut the same 60ft time with a FWD, that you can with an AWD (with 2 equally modded cars/same HP), without slicks.

$hit, I had a fwd/at, bone stock w/13g, and I lit the tires through 2nd in the rain. My AWD? Lights for a bit in 1st, and grips, and that's with a big16g.

the idea would be hot if it WASNT on a car that can come w/ AWD to begin with. If you had the idea on something like maybe a civic(boo hondas!) then it would be hot but since you can by an awd car, then nobody would appreciate it as much as u do.

i thought awd breaks more parts (very expensive parts) and weighs like 300lbs more than front wheel drive- and they are hard to find. Wouldn't fwd gst, tsi with a lsd and decent tires do fine (not launching at redline)? won't awd will get walked on by fwd with same hp considering the fwd tires hook up?

i really dont know wats wrong with you people that complain about fwd cars i own a tsi fwd andwe also have an awd in the family i must say the awd is much easier to get off the line but hey if your a noob and want life easy then go for an awd but i prefer my fwd over the awd. at first i got to launching the fwd it was hard and yes past 300whp you will spin crazily down the road but hell if you want to pull nice 60 fts just buy an quaffe LSd and you get into the 1.8s with good drag radials plus you spank awd in high end so theres some insight .. if you get into the high horsepower say 450 + then awd is very very helpful it practically dominates but fwd still do hold their own you just need an lsd otherwise consider yourself smoked by the AWDs :|

haha damn chill guys... im selling my GST finially. i bought a 1991 TSI yesterday. i didnt really even plan on buying a car but i seen it chillin at this place by my house saturday night when i was going to the street races so i called the guy and ended up buying it sunday afternoon. i gotta switch a lot parts over from my eclipse into the talon tho. like im switching the whole interior because the talon has them ugly ass multicolored seats haha, and heres a list of all the things im swaping:

14B turbo (talons turbo leaks oil)
Radiator (brand new one in eclipse)
Plug Wires
Front Seats
Rear Seats
Door Panel Carpet inserts
Dual Gauge pod with gauges
Indiglo Gauges
Downpipe
All 4 Tires
Shift Knob
Pedals

i think theres some more but i cant remember it all.

Screw all of that....I'm not a baller, so money does not fall out of my ass........and mom and dad doesn't pay for all my mods(now if I bought a civic like they wanted me too it be different LOL)

Seriously tho.......I'd just by some kick @ss slicks......but that's just me I guess....:p

hahah im not a baller either man... my parents dont pay for jack.. ive earned everything i got.... i own my own business now... i make turbo kits hahha.. nothin for DSMs tho... DSM has enough performance parts... theres no more market to be made so i ventured into area where "big" companys dont bother going and found it to be pretty good to me! but it hasnt started takin off.. so far im jus making my payments on my eclipse and talon... i owe on my eclipse still but im tryin to sell it.. o well.. hhahahaha... but yea i got most of the stuff swaped into the talon... just gotta do some small stuff... took me two days to swap the turbos.. it sucked.
