i cant get my tranny on with my transfer case on, so i tryed taking it off. how many bolts are soposed to be on the transer case because i think some one before me broke the head of a bolt off in the case and i can only get 5 bolts out

There are 5 bolts total, 2 on the top, 2 on the bottom and one by the fill plug. Sometimes the output shaft can stick fairly well to the transfer case. See if you can get any penetrating oil down there. That might help.

I had the same problem. I ended up taking the side cover off the transfer case and finding out the input shaft had broken the sleeve part of the gear end. I had to pry realy hard to get mine off. I ended up having to get another transfer case.

just tap and pry.. but be carefuly because when it pops off it goes right down onto your face or lap..

Its clear that the tranny is out of the car so laying under it could be an issue. But it is the easiest way to get it off. I would say make sure the tranny is drained and turn it upside down and go to work with a pry bar. Front to back and repeat.

A nice 18-24" pry bar slipped inbetween the transfer case and transmission usually does the trick for me.

I have had to use a 40 oz rubber dead blow with a 18" pry bar before though.

You'll get it...:thumb:

auto or manual? The auto's have 6 bolts holding them on rather then 5. Also the input shaft may be seized into the transfer case (I have experienced this twice now) nothing short of a some major prying will break it loose and in both cases I had the input shaft came out of the trans instead of out of the transfer case. A good set of Vice grips and a small pry bar got the input shaft out of the transfer case.
