not sure where to put this so I'll just throw it up here and a moderator can put it were it belongs maybe? anyway on to the goodness!!!

1990 plym. laser rs turbo 5 speed that I bought from a friend that was rear ended by a diesel truck. runs and drives. all stock. 126K

1991 chevy s10 regular cab short box 2wd 5 speed

thinking of going 1 of 2 routes

1st: GM adapter @ buschur racing with a th400 gm trans
2nd: toyota 5 speed trans

The Problem:
I don't which toyota trans to use, just know that there is (or was) as GMC s15 (same as s10) that had a 4g63 swap with toyota 5 speed trans in it.

I don't know why I wanna do this, LOL, because I can I guess and it would be cool to have, maybe even get it painted with the dsmtuners logo's on it!

I have a complete running 90 car (I know it's the dumb year) and I'm going to get the truck on saturday.

I lost my license till Aug. so I have time

I work for my father so I have money

Just need some motivation and help!! Let the posting begin. I want pic's on ones that are done, anything anyones got I'll take.

:sneaky: :thumb: :rocks:

For the S10, would a BorgWarner T5WC trans not work? V6 S10/S15's came with T5's IIRC, though mostly with the weaker non-world-class units. Use the GM adapter from Buschur, the bellhousing pattern will be the same for T5, mucie, saginaw, th350,th400,th700r4 etc. Those trannies (internal rail shifter- no linkage/cables!) with a Hurst shifter are the most rock-solid shifting I have ever experienced. CLANK! Positive engagement. You will never miss a gear. They just don't hold up to huge low end torque (no big block V8's but a turbo 4 should be ok), they are good for up to ~350-400 lb ft. I put one into my 63 Nova wagon behind a mild 300whp 327 back in the day. The rear trans pad mount is about 2" farther back (same pad and bolt pattern, tho) than the usual GM stuff, that would be the only difference in your install vs a TH400. Besides the hydraulic clutch, that is. I ground off the mount for the slave for my Nova and used the old bellcrank-pushrod setup from the three-on-tha-tree. I used a CF DF but there are lots of options, you would need a disk that matched the spline count of the T5, can't remember what it was now, it was like 15 years ago...

Jsut buy a wrecked 87-90 or so Z28, and part the rest out! They are plentiful. Different years used different synchros sometimes, so you might need special fluid. Mine was an 87 with carbon fiber 5th synchros and it needed some GM synchroshift.

There is also someplace that "spices" them up for use in Jaguar road racing cars, I forget who they are now but they offer many improved parts and different gear ratios.

I guess I still love the Bowtie a little bit :)

Ha ha to tell you the truth I'm a chevy guy to (hence I'm putting it in the s10) I was also considering doing a "4g63 syclone", but the 4.3L Lb4 turbo motor that gm uses makes awsome torque, and I don't want to ruin the syclone / typhoon rep by putting a 4 cyl. in one. anyway I'm thinking of doing a 4 door blazer now instead of the s10 pick up. I like sleepers!

can someone explain to me exactly why toyota made a transmission which bolts up to the 4g63?

also, for the hell of it, can we list all the cars which have had 4g63 swaps in this thread? like a 911, the t7, the fiero, that s10, and such.

I want to find a caterham with a 4g63 in it, once I find a good cheap kit, thats where my spair block is going

My T5 63 nova station wagon was a great sleeper until I went and put those flowmasters on it w/2.5" pipes... The mustang guys weren't as suprised to get bested after that. 2600 lbs and 300 WHP was a pretty good combo considering I got 24MPG on the freeway in 5th gear, turning 2000RPM's at 80 MPH :) I never found the 7000 RPM redline in fifth, only tested it to 140 MPH @3500RPM :thumb: On a track, of course. I love those transmissions :rocks:

BTW that car could beat just about anything stock except the occaisonal DSM off the line ;)

I'll take that as a negative then? I've searched google, dsmtalk, and here on tooners and this is pretty much the only thread (besides random BS on the automotive helper forums) that has anything to do with a 4g63 s10. Is there any interest in this kind of swap? Or are v8's the only cool thing to do?

Dang, I've got an S15 with a knock that this would have been cool for..

I suppose the general idea is that a 4g63 in an s10 is just simply not worth the effort? Or is it that most of the community doesn't have access to the nec. tools and equipment to do the conversion? My uncle has a 12 valve cummins and a Chevy suburban. Needless to say, I have some tools and knowledge. Would anyone like to see this done? Or am I wasting my time? (serious question)

(also, would it be possible to move this thread to the newbie section, I'm not a mod, or I could do it myself. I am seriously considering this swap)

Mighty Max... I've seen it done, a couple times. I like very unique things, that appear stock on the outside :) I don't have an answer for that actually, just wondering if anyone else would like to see it done. I've always liked the little 1g s10's. And am obviously a fan of the 4g63.

You've seen it done with a mighty max. . . So why put the same motor in the same or slightly heavier weight same size mini-pickup with the same potential bedlength and the same cabin size along with no better suspension upgrades or transmission options over completely custom? If you notice, 'same' is often repeated in this paragraph. . . It would be jsut as easy to swap the finders and grill over from an s10 onto a mighty max. . . Doing what hasn't been done? wouldn't that entail actually fomenting a different platform other than already readily available for building?
