I just rebuilt my engine and installed it on my 91 GSX, 5sp. Well the tranny shifted fine but would sometimes have a little trouble going into first gear, so I thought it may be a little low on tranny fluid. I added about 1/3 quart and when I went to shift thru the gears it was hard to go into 3,4, and hard as hell for 5th (with the car off). So I thought it couldve been just overfilled with fluid, so I drained out what I added and its not that bad getting into 3rd and 4th but 5th is hard as hell... almost have to you a lil muscle. also I looked at the bottle and it wasnt SAE rated gear fluid.... Is there anyway to check how much fluid is in there?

Any help please....

Update....

It was overfilled by about a quart....:(
It shifts a little bit easier but it wont shift from 5th to 4th... I have to go from 5th to 3rd then into 4th. Also with the car at idle the tranny is making a little bit of noise, but it goes away when I press in the clutch....

When you check your cables check from both ends. I had the same problem about a month ago. It turns out the little bracket that holds the cables to the transmission had come loose from the transmission.

I already checked the cables, but Ill do that again just to be sure. Also Ill drain my tranny fluid and refill with the pennzoil synchromesh

Whenever you are experiencing 5th gear problems and you have ruled out the external problems (shifter mechanism), you should check the nut on your 5th gear assembly. It does require taking off the outer tranny case, but it isn’t all that difficult. If you catch it in time (those nuts tend to back off), it will be simply a matter of installing a new nut, but if you let it go, it can take out most of your tranny
