90 tranny worth rebuilding?

Ok I am gonna rebuild my tranny (somday) but from what i hear the 90 years are not worth bothering with. My question is why? Theres nothing wrong with mine its just bone stock with 172,000 miles on it and i figuer with added power a 4 spider diff and new syncros would be nice. also reshimming the trasfer case. ;) I would do the work myself as it doesent look all to bad. So it it worth it or should i go find me a 23 spline tranny? thanks.
 
actually its not worth rebuilting, you are better off buying a new one as it is alot cheaper that way,

Most places wont dear to rebuild an AWD tranny,when there is nother wroung with it. becuase the thousand of pieces the come out of it, (confusing) "duh"( where does everything go george)

Why don't you buy a jap spec tranny, (as it is more reliable) and it will cost you around $800 to $1000 with about 30,000 miles.

and beside if there nother wroung with your tranny just buy a (2600) clutch kit for it from ACT. that will run you about $340 for it. I guess think about your option

If you are going to rebuld your tranny, do it only at a proven DSM shop like Shephard or TRE. Do NOT go to you local tranny shop. 99.999% they screw up our trannys.

If you ask Shep or TRE, they prefere to work on 91+ trannys, that is not to say that they can't rebuild a 90 tranny.

But you can always pick up '91-'92 core tranny and have it rebuild instead.

JDM trannys are OK, but they will not shift as good as Shep or TRE rebuild trannys...

Thanks for the info guys. But ya missed somthing in my first post. " I will do the rebuild myself";) It caint be to complicated. I can get all the parts for about $600. But a JDM tranny would be nice. that is if they come with 4 spider difs? DO they? I would think so with a price tag of $800- $1000OMG But i do know this after futher research I will find me a 23 spline trany/transfer case to work with. ;)

Mmmm $850? Does that include a 4 spider diff and double syncros Vr4 first gear and steal shift forks ? If so thats a good deal. :) I looked at jis site and it just says starting price at $700. Also got to take in account is that i would have to send it off so cost of shipping would have to be factored in. So nobody has done there own rebuilds? I find this hard to believe:confused: I mean hell if i get a book, call around and ask questions I am sure i will find the knowledge to rebuild it myself.:thumb:

I didn't say that. I have seen many very good mechanics and tranny techs attempt it and totally screw it up! Part of the problem is the fact that finding the right parts is NOT easy. You add the fact that you are starting with a '90 tranny and you are really asking for trouble...

4 Spider gear conversion itself is around $500. What do you think? :) No, that is a typical basic rebuld job.

Here is a rule of thumb to follow: How can tell an honest average tranny shop? They refuse to do a DSM tranny... If they claim to have done dozens with great results while you and all of your DSM friends have heard of them, run away! :) BTW, this also applies to DSM timing belts.

I called TRE and talked to the main man there for like an half hour why he didnt want to rebuild my 90 GSX tranny. Something like some of the parts they used where smaller and useless to rebuild because they just dont hold up. He said just by a new tranny, and I dont think he was just trying to get me to buy a tranny, he seemed very honest. I would go to them for the work, unless you attempt it your self, then I would say good luck.
 
Yep i talked to Mike at TRE also and I am definetly going with a 23 spline tranny;) My 90 can be a spare if need be. :thumb: Its gonna be awhile before i can get anouther tranny tho but when i do i will be rebuilding it myself and it will save me atleast $600in labor with all the upgraded parts. This all providing the fact that I dont screw up the rebuild.:shhh: But with carfull planning I dont see any problems. :cool:
 
I have rebuilt my own tranny and some for other people, its really not that bad but you need access to a press to get the bearings off. It took me awhile the first time, but I've done it so many times it really seems easy now.

Actually, I dont think that you do have a tranny worth rebuilding. Talk to anyone who knows anything about dsm trannies and they'll tell you that the parts in that year are too small and will end up breaking again and by the time you make it right, you could have a brand new tranny.
