im puttin a bmtranny lsd in my car and i cant seem to get the two 36mm bolts off. Ive tried to put the penny in between the gears but the bolts just dont want to give. Any suggestions or has anyone run into this prob before?

An impact wrench or a really long pipe (2 or 3 feet should do) and a friend on the tranny end to make sure you don't screw anything up. Also, a good way to lock the tranny is to pop the roll pin for 5/R shift fork and put the tranny into like 1st or some other gear and then slid the 5/R shift fork on to 5th, this locks up the tranny and won't damage any teeth. :thumb: There is a v-faq at vfaq.com, if you have any other Q's it might answer them faster.

5/r shift fork? no idea what your talkin about. Sorry

No problem, I just abbreviated 5th gear/ reveres gear shift fork. If you knew that and just don't know were it is it the C shaped thing that is connected to the rod coming out the top of the tranny. Just move the shift levers through the shift pattern and when you see it slide up and down you should be able to figure out what I am talking about.

Now im stuck getting the main casing off. I took all of the bolts out and the ball and springs. I can get the main casing about 1/2 inch up and then it catches on something. It sounds like its getting stuck on the 5th gear selector? Help

You took off every thing up top right? Gears, and the shift fork, so all you have is two shafts and the rod that the 5/R shift fork was on? It should just come off, it might take a bit of extra help, but don't get too wild. Pull as staight up as possible to prevent any binding. Other than that I don't know.

Yeah, i took everything off on the top and all the bolts and everything. Whats happening is when i start to pull the case upward the gear shifter goes into 4th like the case is stuck on something and is pulling on the shifter fork and forcing it into 4th. I can get it about 1" and then it just completely stops. if i try to put the gear shift to neutral or in to an upward gear like 1,3, it pulls the casing back down. I cant figure out what it is stuck on. On the vfaq they say that a gear usually falls off while removing the case, im wondering if maybe its caught on that or what. Whoever rebuilt it must have tourqed the crap out of it cuz my torque wrench only goes to 200ft/lbs and i was put more into it than that to get the 36mm bolts off.

Try lifting the case up, putting two bars or spacers of some type accross to hold the case up and then try to shift the tranny, but it sounds like you maybe lifting the gear set up. is the shaft coming up too? if it is put the bars or a spacer of some type and hammer on the shaft (with a block of wood inbetween to cushion/prevent damage)

There is a bolt by the shifter links that has a ball at the end that grabs a rail inside the case. It is about even with the bottom of the middle section of case. Also, right around the corner from the 3 bolts that have springs and balls, there is another bolt that has to be removed that has a ball that locks into the rail. Did you get the reverse switch bolt? Did you get the bolt that is opposite the 3 with balls and springs? I think it has a hex head on it. After those, just look around the case. If it is a bolt, remove it. Check through all the VFAQs that have to do with pulling apart the trans. They can be good reference to help you out.

And so you know, the gears don't fall off. The race to the bears may fall off, but the gears are pressed onto a stack and if they fall off, you got bigger problems.

alright thanx, ill check it out tommorow. I got the whole gear falling off thing from the vfaq about the lsd insert, but ill take that into account. Thanx for the info, now im goin to bed...

For archive purposes. In the VFAQ its for a 1st Gen Tranny. I had the same issue when doing the install myself on my 2nd Gen Tranny. Make sure that you take out all the bolts on the mid section.

Three bolts with springs and balls

Reverse switch and 19mm bolt that is below the reverse switch

Hex bolt on the opposite side of the three bolts that hold the balls in.

I did'nt take the Hex bolt out and was having the same problem the other guy was. When I took the hex bolt out the case came up with ease. I hope this helps anyone else that has followed the VFAQ and became stumped. Good luck.
