Well I changed my oil on the rear or I should say lack of from previous owner and I went to fill it up with some Redline fluid. After I drove and parked it, I noticed a few puddles right under the drain bolt. I though I didn't put the washer back on but when I checked I seen it was on there. Then I noticed the leak was coming from the area where the driveshaft goes into the rear end. My question is, is there a seal there or something that may of dried up and that's why it's leaking from there? If so what seal do I need Also on downshifts or when I let off it makes alot of weird noises like whining and a little clanking. thanks for the help

It's called a "pinion seal" and it's less than $10.

And, then, a total nightmare to actually install.

But you need to deal with this before the diff is destroyed.

I had the same thing happen on my AWD... The part is cheap, but the labour to install it is a PITA w/o a lift. I broke down and brought it to my mechanic who did it on straight time... took him about an hour. Good Luck, if you decide to do it yourself!

Why is it so hard to install? Is it something a shady tree mechanic can do or something that needs some skill.

I just can't stand (as it were) working on the prop shaft when the car is only on jack stands. With a lift and air-tools, it's pretty straight-forward.

No lift but can get airtools. I will just have to suck it up. Thanks for the help

I have the same problem but from where the drive shaft connects to the t-case. How hard is that to fix?

To take out the front t-case for me was pretty simple. I don't know about the seal though
