So recently my tranny has been getting much worse. It has always slightly grinded when shifting to second like everyone else's dsm tranny. But lately (keep in mind i live in iowa and the weather is cold) its been grinding a lot and sometimes its impossible to shift into almost all gears. I checked the cluctch pedal adjustment rod, and made it so that the clutch engages a little bit off the floor, i thought that this could be the problem at first but after a little bit of driving it will do it again. So i changed to penzoild syncromesh, that helped a little bit, definitely less grinding. But now its hard to get into 1st and it will grind when going into reverse almost everytime. I find that it helps (when stopped) to put it in second then force it into first to start going. it wont necessarilly grind when im doing this but sometimes its just damn near impossible to put in first. Anyone got any ideas? syncros? I can't really afford doing a rebuild right now, so im just hoping its something different (cheaper). oh yea and the only mod i have on the drivetrain is an sbr 3500 clutch. thanks guys.

You might try a synchromesh fluid. I've even used Mobil One Synthetic engine oil in a couple of transmissions and so far they both have done excellent. Use the heaviest you can find, like a 20-50 or such. Mitsubishi also had a shift enhancer they used to sell. I don't know if it's still available. It's a small bottle. You could call Mitsubishi and see if it is still out there.

If none of the above don't work, you are in for a synchro replacement. If I was doing that, I would replace all the bearings and synchros and the little locks on the shift hubs.

Good Luck

I replaced the fluid (i think it might have still been the original) with penzoil syncromesh. I had read somewhere that i shouldn't use something too heavy in cold weather, and since use it as my daily driver in iowa where the weather sucks i just went with all syncromesh. I can shift the car fine when the engine is off, would that mean anything? thank you

you can try engine oil like old mitsu said. should do away with the hard to get in gear prob. if your still grindin its gotta be the syncros, time for a rebuild. what your asking bout the heaver weight is just the fact it takes longer to warm up. and since some gear oil is 75w90 in cold weather it gives you the hard to get in gear scinario you have. hard to put in gear in cold weather is not goin to hurt your tranny, but grinding will.

check the shift cable bracket on the side of your tranny. i had a similar problem, which eventally got so bad that i couldnt shift into any gear at all. my braket had lost all of its bolts and the bracket itself bent. if thats not the problem, then its probably syncos. don't be to worried though, it is a dsm after all;)

So should i do a mixture of penzoil syncromesh and engine oil? what kind would you guys recommend? Just out of curiosity why does it get worse as i drive it more? because when i just start it up it is usually fine. thanks

No mixing. Just use one or the other.

Like I said, I've got 2 rebuilt transmissions currently running the Mobil 1 engine oil and both have been doing fine with absolutely no problems. If I encounter problems, I will post them. So far, so good.

Good Luck

Do you think i might need to bleed my clutch? I was driving around for 30 minutes or so last night, and when i was pulling in to the driveway and i had it in first gear it would still be pulling me even thought the clutch was all the way in. so i took it out of gear and it would stop then jammed back in (it didn't grind) and it would start pulling me again. So the clutch pedal is all the way down and it is still engaging somehow. when i start out driving it is fine but after a little bit it starts to do this and its really hard to get into gear. what do i need to do?

Try bleeding your clutch could have air in the lines, also look at your slave cylinder and master cylinder and check their lines for leaks. Your clutch isnt fully disengaging. Sounds like something isnt pushing your slave cylinder rod far enough. The fluid you need is dot3.

this is a post to discuss tranny promblems..
I almost have the same promblem with my tranny, but it grinds going into 3rd...My fluid and my axles have been changed.. Also I have flushed and bleed my clutch lines.. The other night I tryed to race it (slam shift style) it was kinda cold in Vegas.. And the car would not go into gear. 2nd, 3rd, or 4th. My cables are ok have not moved, but i'm sitting on a stock clutch... After trying to race it, I stoped checked everything then just drove it like a daily driver and it was fine. But I can tell the the gears are loose and tight in certain areas.. And you can hear the tranny in the drive gear....

Again today I tryed to high rev. and slam the gear into 4th. It did not go into gear felt like i had no tranny, so i slide it into 3rd which grinded, and it went into drive. So I drove it normal and it was fine.. What the Hell is my promblem. Please help...
