Hey guys. Sorry if this is a repeat thread. I didn’t see much about this.

I’m doing a long-block engine swap & I just found out my flywheel had a few little cracks in it.

I was just wondering what flywheels have you guys had goods experiences with?

The ligthter ones can rev down too quick and stall the car... along with you having to slip the clutch a lot more to get a smooth take-off.

I quite like my OEM one.

ACT seems to know what they are doing. just make sure you get the longer bolts if they are needed with the aluminum flywheels.

Word of advice: If you buy a brand new flywheel, be sure to have it balanced before installing, even if the manufacturer states it doesn't need to be.

This is especially true for aluminum flywheels.

SBR flywheel along with their clutch kit.. not problems thus far.

Spec flywheel and Stage-II Clutch... jsut installed, but so far.... great....!!!

Just replace it with a decent oem flywheel. Put that money elsewhere in the car. You will not gain anything performance wise from a light flywheel.
Road race guys prefer light flywheels because it easier to rev match down shifts.

You're absolutely correct. All the people running 10s with lightweight flywheels are a bunch of ricers who have no idea what to do with their money. In fact, the only reason they get them is to justify buying one of those cute little shattershields. y0!

Don't be fooled by those who say that lighter flywheels reduce rotating mass, freeing up hp and allowing the engine to spin down faster for shifts. They have no of what they are speaking. Double y0!

ps. And you run 11s? Weird.

So... Why bother to buy a lighter flywheel if there is no performance gains? Are you saying that everyone with lighter flywheels have made a bad investment and have no idea what they are doing? Theoretically if you remove weight from the flywheel, that will allow the entire rotating mass to rev up and down faster wont it? Is that not considered a performance gain? In addition, if the engine has less of a mass to spin, wouldn't that increase horse power due to the fact that the reduced weight would equate to a smaller load on the engine? I'd like to know your opinion is on the purpose of a lighter flywheel. Why do they sell them, and why would a person want to put one on a car, and what application of racing would benefit from such a modification.

Thanks, Ray

Lighter flywheels typically do well in road racing and applications where you downshift more and want to rev-match. In drag racing, you typically want to keep the engine rotating between shifts in order to keep the momentum going, which means you don't want a flywheel that is too light - at least that's the idea. I wouldn't say you gain horsepower with a lightened flywheel though. Flywheels are not a bad investment. Anything that is lighter and reduces rotating mass is usually a good thing, but it also depends on what type of racing you'll be doing. Drag racing and road racing require different setups.

Now please people, let's stay on topic about this. Give your experiences with different flywheels. If you haven't used more than one, please do not say that one is better than another.

I am not going to sat one is better than the other but I will suggest getting something that is sfi approved. Ive seen too many video links on here where people have had their flywheel explode.

theres a good difference between the stock flywheel and a lightened RRE one. once i dropped the clucth and tranny back in the car, the car felt more spirited. worth the money.

I'll triple yO tHaT for shOW!

I've done back to back swaps going from a aluminum 8lb flywheel back the heavy stock one. With the same setup, tune and driving there was NO loss of mph on the quarter mile track. I did pick up alittle e.t. from being able to launch easier and carrying more momentum out of the hole.
Jtoby, you find it weird I run low 11's on the stock flywheel or just in general?
