Okay guys, I'm trying to adjust my clutch. I'm down under the dash trying at the #@%#@%#@%#@%ing lock nut on the master cylinder clutch adjustment rod and just can't do it. There's no room to turn a wrench, and the huge tension coil is in the way so I can't even see the nut. Is there an easy way to go about doing this? Can I remove the coil without it being impossible to put back in? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I've already stripped the nut a little and will probably have to go buy a smaller set of vise grips to get to it now....

Ahh...

You can remove the spring coil. It's held in place by a bracket and a 12mm (I think, maybe 10mm) bolt. After you unbolt the bracket, push down on the clutch pedal and pry up (or down, depending on your orientation) on the spring and it will pop off the perch. Then slide it out of the bushing.

However, you don't NEED to do this to adjust the pedal.

The lock nut on the adjustment rod is 12mm, you should be able to loosen the nut and turn the rod without removing the coil, or anyhting else, unless the nut/rod is jammed tightly. A 12mm open end wrench will fit on the jam nut, unless they changed something between 90-91 that I'm unaware of. The nut is on the backside of the "U" shaped bracket.

After you get the jam nut loose, you can turn the MC rod with your fingers.

If you can't get it loosened, hit me up on AIM.

Good luck.

i had to adjust mine yesterday and it only took me about 30 minutes to do it. You should be able to get at the nut. I have a 92 tsi, i'm also not sure if they changed it in 90-91. On www.vfaq.com they show the procedure on a 90 gsx and that looks like the same set up on all first gens.

good luck

I hear you! Right now I feel like my back has been on my floor more than my feet have. And now I have to go at it once again, I bought a bushing kit for the clutch pedal assy. that will get rid of all the plastic bushings, and I will weld all of that stuff up while I'm at it.

Sorry, just rambling off some frustration.

Mike
