Will an 92 AWD tranny fit any other 92 AWD?

I got an offer from a guy today on a "mint 92 awd tranny" and he told me to count the splines on my center diff. I just wondered if this is necessary? Is there any difference between the trannies in that year? Or even a year before/after?

he isn't very smart. count the splines on your transfer case. i think they only make them in 22 and 23.
