Need some help here guys. I'm running an AWD T.R.E. tranny on my 97 GSX and 1st gear is popping out after 20,000 miles on a new tranny. My suspicion is a weak 1st/2nd gear synchro spring or key, or maybe the 1st/2nd gear EVO shift fork is worn, which seems hard to believe. If I slam the shifter home, the gear engages without popping, if I'm easy on it then it pops out.

Has anybody done a quasi tranny rebuild with the tranny still on the car? I remember how much fun it was pulling the tranny out the first time, and I'm not looking forward to pulling the tranny out again. Thanks.

make it easier on yourself and pull the tranny. Actually its impossible to do it with it in the car anyways, so you should pull it.

Just pull the trans. It's a lot easier to work on it out of the car. If you've pulled the trans before it shouldn't take too long now. I got it down to 1.5 hours removal and less than 2 to completely reinstall it.

Might want to check your intermediate shaft bearing once you get the trans out.
