Ok, I am hearing a rattling noise that comes from the top of the tranny next to the block where the clutch is. To describe the sound, it sounds kinda like a loose bolt noise. Its not a ting, or a knock. Ive gone to 2 shops and they all gave me different stories. One said it could be a transaxle bearing. The other said it could be the throw-out bearing. The clutch is brand new and has only 4k on it. Oh and when i put the clutch in the noise dissapears. some one please help, i dont want to have to spend a grand on a rebuild or a new tranny. this is already gonna cost me 500 bucks just for a shop to pull it off and see whats wrong. what do u guys think?

sorry for the novel i just need to find out what the noise is

thanks

Sounds like clutch chatter to me. If it is not extremely bad (loud) I would not worry about it to much. In my experience every car that I have had has done it to a certain degree. :laser:

They guy i bought the car from, my friend, said that it had no problems and didnt make any noises before he put the clutch in. So i definately know something is wrong, but i cant figure it out.

i think it sounds liek the throw out bearing..ask the guy you got it from if he put a new throw out bearing in there..what kind of clutch did he put in?stock?

The guy i bought it from bought a new clutch kit and put it in. As for the TOB he thinks he put a new one on, it should of came with the kit. The clutch is a stock one, but i dont think it was a mitsu one. I think it might be a TOB with a metal sleeve causeing the noise, but im not totally shure.

Hey I have the same problem with my Spec stage 1 cluch, but I put in the new throw out barring that came with it. I had no problems with it all summer but when the cold weather hit thats when I started hearing the noise. I would say it's not the TOB, but I'm going to continue look for the answer. :(

Clutch bearing? are u meaning the throw-out bearing? I hope its that, cuz i dont want to spend 420 dollars to find out that it wasnt the problem and end up spending more on a rebuild.

Yes thats what I ment, im lazy and did not feel like typing the full name.....I went out to start my car one day and as I was taking off I heard the rattle noise....but at idle it was not there...so I gave it a little gas and there was the rattlle yes it sucked. :D

Well, im gonna have to take it to a shop to get the TOB replaced. Im gonna have to rent a car for 3-4 days(@30 a day). Which is not that bad, but i will end up spending close to 600 to fix it. I can do it my self, but i dont have the tools or equipment to do it.

hope it's only the TOB because my car as the exact same problem and the shops are beating around the bush :talon:

I've had that same exact sound for I don't know how long now. At least a year. When it first started I just assumed it was the throw out bearing. No big deal, I was about ready to replace the clutch anyway. A little while later I ended up putting on my ACT 2100, XACT flywheel, replaced the clutch fork and pivot ball, slave cyl, and most importantly the throw out bearing with an oem replacement. Put everything back together and guess what I heard? Yup, that same rattle. It's something inside my transmission. Now I'm just waiting for the day my transmission breaks or explodes. That'll give me a good excuse to get a nice rebuilt shep or tre tranny with a LSD. Of course now that I'm waiting for it to go, I think it's going to last me forever. :|

Silverbolt_2003, if you ever figure out what's causing your rattle, please post it up here. I'd be interested to know.

yeah, i will let u guys know, im still thinking if im gonna fix it now or wait a while and save up for a rebuild from shep. dont know yet, plus i need to get a secondary vehicle incase my tranny or clutch explodes or something. :|

bringing this back because no one commented on what fixed it :)

my N/T ESI non-turbo manual tranny is making the same kind of noise...with it idling or in any RPM range I get a metallic popcorn noise from the tranny. When I push the clutch in the noise disappears. Is the throw out bearing the only bearing in the tranny that could make such a noise? THANKS!

p.s. i have been working on the car for months so I have not taken it off jack stands or driven it. or put it in gear even (when it was running) :)

Are you sure the noise is coming from the driver's side of the transmission? If so, more than likely the TOB, otherwise, it could be one of the other bearings on that side of the tranny.

If the noise is coming from the passenger side of the tranny, it's either a bearing at that end, or your stake nuts have backed off and are rattling around the end case of your transmission(this can't go on, you have to fix this, or spent a lot more on new gears/cases).

It definently sounds like its coming from ~5 inches or so within the area after the block. If it's the TOB can I still drive the car?

I wouldn't drive it too much, too far. If you can possibly fix it, or get it fixed, do so ASAP. Sometimes they go sooner rather than later. Sometimes you can drive for a long time. Depends. Be easy on it anyways. Take an afternoon and replace it as soon as you can.

aghhhhh i hate transmission work. Will do tho. Thanks for the help. :thumb:

I was having the same problem last summer. I spun a rod bearing before ever figureing out what it was. After putting the new engine in the noise was gone. When I pulled the transmision off the old engine I was expecting to find a broken clutch spring, but it was in good condition, so was every thing else. With the noise being gone after putting in the new engine I assumed that the noise had something to do with the engine.

Well, about a month ago (7 or 8 months of no noise, ) I started getting the same noise again, sounds like gravel in the top of the tranny just outboard of the bell housing. When I put the clutch in the noise goes away, if I'm rolling to a stop with the clutch in and in gear I still get the noise. If the clutch is in and the tranny is in neutral, no noise even while rolling.

Back when I did the engine swap I didn't do anything to the tranny except change the fluid and inspect for what was making the noise. Based on this I decided to change the fluid and see what happens. The oil that came out was squeaking clean, no metal flakes, not burnt looking. The noise was somewhat random so it will take time to see if this fixes the problem or not. It seems to be more frequent when it warm out side and the car is still cold.

My car has the exact same problem. Haven't detached the transmission, but when I do, I expect I'll be replacing my throwout bearing. I bought a new one a few months ago because I plan on doing a clutch swap/trans rebuild anyway.
