Hey guys, i really need your help. I'm in the process of buying a GST and now somethings come up. The owner said that the transmission's been acting up and won't shift very well. He took it into the shop to have it looked at under warranty and they said that it's the "rod" that goes through the middle of the tranny. It's worn out and has to be replaced. And even worse, the "rod" can't be replaced alone, the whole tranny has to be replaced. He said that the car will work just fine until it warms up but then it will shift very funny. The clutch pedal either won't come back up when depressed, or gets really hard to depress to change gears.

But i don't have any idea about what this "rod" is. Do any of you have any idea what the heck he's talkin about? Or if I do have to replace the transmission, how much will it cost? I'm thinkin about goin to Aamco since they have a good rep. in my town but I've never dealt with transmissions before.

Thanks all ahead of time. Any opinions or similar stories appreciated.

Sounds like it is something else, either the master/slave cylinders or tob. To me any tranny can be fixed, there is no part "rod" that cripples the entire thing. I think that the dealer is probably pulling a fast one on him. I don't even know what the "rod" would be since the term is so vague. He should take it to someone else and get a better opinion, especially if your going to buy the car.

yeah, i see what you mean, but the place is doin all this stuff for free. they're not gonna be makin any money from it so i don't think they're trying to pull anything over on me. i was thinking it was the slave cylinder too, but the mechanic said that the rod or whatever was really worn down and he was sure that was the problem.

So what have you any of you guys paid before for a new tranny?

Well I paid around 900 for my Shep race rebuild. That makes sense too, if they are doing it for free, that is even better.

cool 97TSIAWD, is that including labor and new transmission case. Because the outer transmission case is going to have to be replaced for my car.

Well that is the price if you supply the transmission core. Check his site, shepracing.com, it might not be listed but you can call him, he is a very nice down to earth guy. That was for the whole rebuild, I put it back in myself.

Thanks for the replies so far, but I'm not looking for a racing transmission. I'm only gonna be getting a rebuilt tranny and i won't be able to put it in myself. I don't have the equipment.
