Hey everyone, just thought I would like to share my experience replacing my clutch.

I am about halfway done I would say, I just got the trans dropped and then it got too dark to work. I haven't run into any problems yet, but I have a bad feeling about aligning the clutch and everything like that. I almost dropped the transfer case on my face when I was taking it out, I wasn't expecting it to come out so easy. Let me tell you, working outside in 20 degree weather with no heater really sucks. I have never had a garage to work in, but I never needed one because I only worked on my car in the warmer weather. Any things I should be aware of before I continue?

Also, another quick question. I noticed a bit of play in the clutch fork. Is this normal? I didn't think it would be but then I realized the clutch was bad so maybe that has something to do with it.

The clutch fork has play because its mounted on a ball so that it moves freely. It will become snug once your re-attach the slave cylinder when your finishing up. The clutch alignment is simple if you have the tool. Put the tool through the middle of the pressure plate>align splines on the clutch disc and slide onto alignment tool behind pressure plate>insert tool into hole in the middle of flyhweel>torque down pressure plate to spec. About how many hours has this taken you? I might be in the same boat in a few weeks when I replace my clutch... Any tips/suggestions? I'll be following the VFAQ page on how to do it all... Good luck!!
 
The average clutch swap will take 4 hours with FWD and 5 hours with AWD if you know where each bolt is and you know what you are doing, if you are doing it as you go add in approx. 2 hours
 
Well, I have been working on it for about 12 hours so far. Keep in mind though I am working outside and mostly by myself. I didn't use the vfaq, although I should have, so it has taken me a while just to figure things out.

As far as tips go, MAKE SURE you take the "gusset" out when removing and reinstalling the trans. I didn't do this and it took several attempts to get it back in until I removed it. Also, try to keep your bolts organized and labeled. I failed to do this and spent a lot of time trying different bolts. Finally, I had to take the drivers side strut out to get the axle back in. You might need an extra person to do this, it would make it a lot faster. But hey, you live and learn right?
