i want to get a nice shifter like a B&M, but the 90s shifter is so screwy they dont make one!! so what do i have to do to put a nice shifter into the car??? if i picked up a 2g shifter base could i make it work with a little prodding??(i have access to a mill and all sorta cool stuff) i just dont want to get it and get over my head!! thanks in advance!!

Skip the 2G shifter swap, it's easy to shorten the throw on the 90 shifter.

First get rid of the stock shift handle and replace it with a normal height shift knob. I snagged one from a Hyundai Scoupe in a junkyard, it's short, thick and black.

Next, do the mod listed here www.mario.germain.com/shifter.html It shows how to shorten the throws.

I also highly recomend replacing the rubber bushings in the cable ends (on the tranny side of the cables) with skateboard bearings. It tightens the throws a little more by removing all freeplay, and makes the pivot work as smooth as glass.

i did skateboard bearings in my cables, switched to a 91 shifter base with shifter base bushings, 91 cables, 91 cable bracket and a Pilot short throw, MOMO shift knob (this thing fits right in your palm, feels HUGE, but doesn't look it) moved my seat forward a lot (LOL), and OMFG, feels like a damn Ferarri. I can bang thru gears, no sloppiness. So much fun.

accordint to vfaq the 90 is diff.than the rest, so i dont know how fidenza would have gotten one to work for those 4 years?? idk might have to give them a call anywho!!

For what it's worth, or the price of an aftermarket one, you can find a machine shop locally, and you can get a machinist there to cut your stock one down and weld it back.
I got mine done for 40$, and the guy did a Really good job on it. It's not any physically shorter, but the throw is quite short.
