Reverse gear GRINDING very VERY BADD!!!!!!!!!!

I have a 91 talon. i got it about 6 months ago and one day when my bro was driving it, he pulled into a driveway to turn around. he put in in reverse and was backing up at about 10MPH. then all of the sudding it poped out into neutal. well i talked to the preveise owner and he said that it had done this some of the time. so now it does it any time i put on to much gas on it in reverse or if im trying to reverse up a hill. its getting worse and worse. sometimes it pops out only half way and grinds pretty bad and when i let the rpm's drop and fully ingauges in reverse all by itself. very odd i thought. i can hold it in reverse sometimes and it helps but it still pops out. so does anybody no what this is. i can't figure it out. my only guess is that when the trans was rebuilt at 80,00 miles the person didn't aline the reverse gear right. that is my only guess. so does anybody else no.

could be the idler gear is bad.

Sounds like your syncronizers are going out. Time for a rebuild!

umm..... well i no it doesn't grind in any other gears but it sometimes bitches going into gear. like first i can't throw it into grear really fast you just have to put some pressure on it and let is just go into gear. the car has 111,000 miles and when i bought the car from the guy he said that the motor and trans were both rebuilt at 80,000 so i don't think it is the syincros, but who knows he could have been lieing. i was thinking about getting someone with more experiance with trans then me to take out the trans and take a look at it. if it does need a rebuild should i do that or just buy i whole new trans.

Yup exactly, infact (off topic) the idler gear is straight cut like all the gears inside a dog box transmission. If you wonder how dog box sounds like, it sounds like your stock reverse gear X 2. I've never heard a 4g63 dog box transmission though. Good luck.

dog box trans??????? never heard of that. can you explain that a little more and what were you trying to tell me to do with it. put it on my car??????? will it fit. as you can see i have no clue what it is so teach me????

Is there an aftermarket intake pipe of some sort on the car? If so it may be interfering with the shifter linkage. With the car parked, pop the hood and have someone put it in reverse while you watch. Make sure the shifter arm doesn't hit anything when they do. If there's no interference check to see if you can manually move the shifter arm all the way into reverse. It may be that the shifter linkage inside the car needs to be adjusted or the rubber bushings on the shifter arm has deteriorated and doesn't let you get the transmission fully into gear.

Also take into acount the engine moving back and forth.

Which might cause even closer clearences.

Ive rebuilt a few trannys and what might be going on is ther is a sleeve that moves the idler gear its moved by a leiver then by the smaller shift fork. One of those parts may be worn. Or the idler gear itself is worn where it engauges with the 1st& 2nd gearset . If somebody takes it apart they will prolly find it very simple to fix it unless one of the gearsets are worn.

so you think this is a pretty easy problem to fix. i don't need a whole new trans???? it would be easier to rebuild it and fix these things? cuz next summer i was gona put in a new clutch and stuff. so when the trans is droped for this i should just re-build it shouldn't i???

It depends on how good you are, mechanically speaking. If you can do a timing belt job or take out your trans yourself you prolly can at least take apart the tranny yourself. Then after its apart see what you need (syncros , forks, leavers, gears) asess the damage and go from there. You can usually order all the parts from the dealer or If you know somebody at a local tranny shop that can get u a deal on dealer parts thats good too Every time I have rebuilt mine I just order all the worn parts (Syncros bearings if needed) throught the dealer and have a tranny shop do all the pressing ,Then haul it back to your garage/home and put it back together. So you when ever you put the car in reverse the car grinds and pops out or only when you put it in reverse while moving ?? Also try putting the car in a forward gear like first 2nd any gear then go to reverse and see if it grinds still. I had a similar problem had a mechanic tell me it was my inputshaft or my shift rail.
