ok...jes say im in nutral and im coming to a rolling stop. wen i start to slow down and i kinda push the shifter into first or third gear(without stepping on the clutch) and once i almost come to a dead stop..it pops into gear. i dont get that? has anyone else had this happen? is it surpose to happen?
 
Hmm...I've never heard of it doing that unless you are moving and at low RPM's. But for it just to pop in like that? I've never tried...I like my syncros...
Does it grind and lunge forward?
 
It's a very normal thing, you can actually upshift this way if you just let the rev's drop and pull it into the next gear at the proper time. You can also down shift by pulling it out of gear and revving the engine and again slipping it in at the right time. I used to do it in my Honda all the time, trying to save some wear on the clutch. It will vary from car to car but in my Honda all I have to do is pull on the shifter with normal force once the revs drop about 250rpm and it will slip into the next higher gear in a second. My neighbor used to drive trucks (10 speed + semi's and what not) and calls it "power shifting". When he drives a stick the clutch is only used for launching. He says after a while you can hear when is the right time, but I could never figure that one out my self.
 
Yeah, it is normal, and it is pretty much called power shifting... I first learned about this a few years back when i was driving with my dad and the clutch took a crap and he explained it. It works fine as long as you line up the rpm/speed/gear so it goes smoothly... to do that you just have to know the car.

As for the you can tell by the way it sounds, also true... i know in my car the higher rpms the more screechy it gets... so you can just tell by the pitch of the screech when it is time to shift :p
 
mustgofaster are u talking about double clutching???because if u are u dont have to do that with dsm's because we have syncronizers..so u dont have to rev it up to shift into a lower gear...its bad 4 the syncronizers

No I am not, I am talking about power shifting in a downward fashion. It is similar to power up shifting but instead of letting the revs fall to match, you rev the engine (clutch out) and slip the tranny into gear at the proper time, with out ever touching the clutch, ever. And it it not necicarly bad for the syncronizers, they have to either slow down or speed up the input shaft side of the tranny so either way causes wear.
