My 97 Tsi AWD 5 speed has a loud rattle in the driveline at around 3k and up to about 4.5k rpm. My mechanic and i put in on a lift, and had the car running to hear it. we traced it down to where the driveline joins to the tailshaft of the transfer case. it seems to be slightly loose. all the u-joints are good. you can barely wiggle the driveline at the tailshaft, but it seems to be loose enough to cause a really annoying vibration/rattling sound. any ideas on how to fix it?

I think the same thing is happening to me. I am takeing my car to my mechanic today. I will post any solutions tomorrow. Any one else have this problem?

so, no one else on here has ever had this problem?? it seems like a bushing or something is out in the tailpiece of the trasfercase. is that bushing replaceable? i called mitsubishi, and they said that a new tail piece was like $280, and in the 8 years that he had worked there, he's never had to sell one. anyone have any ideas??

i've heard about the transfer case recall. i read a big post on here after i searched for transfer case recall, but mine isnt leaky, and there is no sign that is was ever leaky. the tailsection of the transfercase im talking about is like $280 or somethin.
i read a few posts on here about a shield that the driveshaft slips into, could that be causing the rattle?
i just need to figure something out here...
