rolling downhill even in gear

hey guys, exaclty what the title says,

in any gear, when i park uphill, even in reverse, the car rolls downhill when the ebrake is off, when it shouldn't obiviously.

i dunno if its the clutch or the transfercase...i popped the clutch at idle in 5th gear and the car stalled so it cant be this insaly bad clutch slip becasue i can tell the point the clutch is engaging and disengaging.

when its running it goes into gears fine. It actually climbs rpm in first gear with very little or slow increase in actual vehicle speed...also on uphill first gear normal takeoffs something chatters, i dont know what....

points to clutch or transfercase? it cant be the tranny cause it goes into gear fine when the car is in motion. its something after the tranny. but what could point it to the car acting like its in netural, even in gear when its shut off? PS: its a 5 speed.
 
well i forgot to add, we spilled coolant all over the clutch one time, like the entire upper half...i just remembered this could be making the clutch slip an insane amount...anyone got any ideas?
 
1. A broken center diff will make the car act like that.

2. Also, since you have a 90, which is an old DSM, it's possible the shaft that transfers power to the transfer case has worn down the splines at the transfer case side.

3. A broken rear axle will do that, too. Check it out, see what you find.

If the clutch was slipping from the coolant spill it would slip more at highway speeds in 5th gear, and hold just fine in 1st gear. On the other hand, a break somewhere along the drivetrain will make the viscous coupling work hard to transfer power, and it will feel like it's slipping more in 1st gear, and hardly at all in 5th.
 
heh it aint tired, its pushing 160psi across all four..mroelike drivetrain problems, sounds like...

so then its not the clutch? it slips alot in first and barely in 5th, meaning it doesnt seem like clutch slipping, but drivetrain problems more towards i guess according to you....the rear axles are fine, and yes im pointing mroe towards the transfer case....
 
well, right now i still think its the clutch or the spline as the dsm'er above states.

of these 3 factors, the center diff, the transfcer case and the rear axle, which of these would make it possible for someone to push the car while in gear? this could narrow it down considerably no doubt.... if it is none of these then its a wholesome clutch problem im guessing.
 
id possibly think the clutch may be shitting, the chatter could very well be the throwout bearing, and if the rpm's are raising a little faster than the vehicle is moving it could be slipping.
 
update:
it was the center diff inside the transmission that was toast...
