FWD-AWD-Rear End

Hi

My car is Mitsibishi eclipse 1991 fwd turbo. I buy a AWD transmission with the transfer case. The problem is the Rear end, becase my car dont have a independent suspension. So, if I put the AWD transmission, Can I put a new Rear End , like a Jeep Cherokee in my car to get power to the rear wheels too?

Hello, alivedinski.

It will be very hard to make the rear axle's gear-ratio match the trans-axles, as well as making the suspension functional. There are issues of cutting out the gas tank to move it higher in the frame, as well as raising the floor of the car to clear the 3rd-member. If you use a Jeep axle, it will be a live axle, and the 3rd member will travel, needing more space than a IRS setup.

It can be done, it will be really hard to do and way more expensive than an AWD car's purchase price. I suggest you enjoy your GST, or sell it and buy an AWD DSM.

yes, seeing at you have a 91, it would cost at least twice the value of your car toi make it awd. so it would make alot more sense to sell the fwd, and buy an awd, instead of throwing money away.
