About a month ago my car started making this metal to metal grinding sound on while the car is coasting. If I press on the gas or the brake the sound goes away. Since then i've had it to 5 different garages and have been told countless possiblities of what is in fact causeing this noise. First off I have a 97 :dsm: GS with 52,000 miles on her. So far i've been told its the rotors, wheel bearings, transmission, and ball joints. Well I know for a fact its not the rotors and a friend of mine looked at my bearings on Sat and said its not my bearings and he said I really doubt its your transmission. So people told me about the ball joint recall on our cars...so I call the dealership and they said they ran my VIN and that I have no open recalls on my car. But my friend that looked at my bearings had this ball joint recall done on his and looked at my ball joins and said that mine have never been changed. He said he knew this because of something on the lower control arm or something I forget. So I am gonna take it to the dealership today. Because up until today my car was making this metal to metal grinding sound like I said earlier, but today it started making a really really bad and very loud banging sound. Its like some one is in my engine bay banging the inside with a jack hammer. If any or you have had this problem or just know what it might be I would really appriciate your help. tia

When you let go of the gas and you are coasting does the car lag back like it's being pulled backwards?

Also does this problem occur with the clutch engaged or disengaged?

Jeeze thats a hard one....
If you have already checked the following:
Wheel Bearings
Strut Tower Mounts
Spindle bolts and lower a arm bolts
Axle Shafts
Brakes

There isn't a whole lot left that I can think of except for one thing, and I'm not sure it is even equiped on a 2G GS. But you might have a carrier bearing that attaches the shaft of the driver side half shaft to the transmission. This is used to stabalize that shaft, and if it did go out, then it would surely cause the symtoms you are describing. Other than that I'm at a loss for figuring that out without driving it or looking at it in person....

Wow, these symptoms sound a lot like mine... Did you ever fix the problem? My car does the weird rattling sound when I take my foot off the accelerator. But if I push in the clutch, it goes away... Anyone got any ideas. Thanks.

Well I got the problem solved and you won't even guess what the problem was...I am kinda ashamed of it but its the mundane details that will get you every time. Ok like I said I had it to 5 different shops and none of them could figure it out so I don't feel as bad...but after having it to the 5th shop my girlfriend goes have you checked your lugs and I'm like I really don't think its the lugs, and she says will it hurt to check them. So wouldn't you know it...the damn lugs were loose and the wheel was rubbing...which explains why when I took my foot off the accelerator it would make the sound. Well that just goes to you show you not to trust every shop you go to either. The one shop told me I needed to replace my tranny. I feel like calling him up and saying that I don't think I will need a tranny I think Ill just tighten up my lugs, but I won't because my tranny will probably go out for sure then. Ok thanks for everyones help and if you need anything lemme know.
