IPT Electromatic auto shifter [Merged 5-7]
Has anyone had experience with an IPT electromatic shifter? Here is the decription on IPT's website:
IPT is now offering a stand alone full manual controller for DSM transmissions.
The IPT Electro-Matic offers you the ability to shift your automatic like a stick!
With this module, which is mounted in the vehicle cockpit, each gear is selected via a push button and lock- up clutch operation is controlled via a toggle switch- the end user has complete control of all transmission upshifts and downshifts
This controller is ideal for road racing, drag racing and street/strip usage. The IPT Elecrto-Matic is also particularly well suited for applications where a stand alone engine management system with no provision for controlling an automatic transmission is utilized.
*Normally ships within 5 business days
Price: $479

If you want answers to questions like this, you need to post in the automatic trans part of the forum.
Anyway, this part is being redesigned. It is going to go from a push button control to being a gated 4 speed shifter.
If you would like specific details and perhaps feedback on these controllers re-post this in the auto trans forum.

I do not have any experience with it yet but we are hoping to run this unit in the shop car at Carbonwerks. SO far the new IPT tranny has been doing EXCELLENT and with the addition of the cooler and potentially this unit, or possibly a newer version we will have one hell of a drag setup in the works. Hopefully within the next couple months we'll have something going on with this in my car. Looks lie it could be great once you get use to the workings of it (finger memory).

Can you turn the device on and off and just drive your car like a regular automatic or do you have to always shift with the control box?

When I was talking to John it was my understanding that you can have it switched off and drive like a normal AT, switch it over for the track.

As it stands now, the device would need to be unplugged and the TCU plugged back in to return to normal operation but this is a 2 minute operation.
This device also eliminates any timing cut that normally occurs at the time of the shift.

But will it screw up my transmission?
Do you need to let off the gas to shift?
How hard is the install?

Well it shifts at full line pressure, so it won't be 100% healthy to use constantly on your daily driver.
Why would you let off the gas to shift? What's the point of owning the A/T?
Just unplug the TCU and plug this unit in.
Mike

TCU is located behind the ECU about 6 inches and is mounted completely horizonal. It's mounted with 3 screws...

I am going to try to convert my manual car to an auto. For several reasons, three of which are: to piss off the 5 speed guys, to better bracket race the car, and to finally answer the age old question of which is faster. Since I am using the same car / motor the test should be valid.
But of course, that means that I need a controller. Does the IPT controller work with the 1G trans or just the 2G? Is the line pressure adjustable? As this car will be driven as much as possible, I do not think that 100% line pressure will hold up for long. But I could be wrong.
Thanks,
Chris

I would call John up at IPT and get the info from him... I have my doubts about it being useable with a 1G tranny...

srGS-t: Assuming you bought it from IPT, did it not come with instructions? It is a pretty simple install from what information I have gathered. It interrupts the stock TCU and controls the shifts via a direct connection to the shift solenoids.
The lockup switch engages the clutch inside the torque converter to create a direct mechanical link between the engine and the transmission. When it is unlocked there is no direct mechanical link, which results in reduced efficiency. By locking the clutch under WOT you can get more power to the tires.
However, the stock clutch is not very strong. IPT and Precision both make a multi-disc converter. I have the 9.5" Billet Multi-Disc converter from Precision, the only caveat is that is rattles when the clutches are disengaged... I don't think the IPT one does this.
Lastly, give John a call at IPT, he has always been very helpful:

IPT Electro-matic manual controller
Does anyone else here have one of these? With the exception of people I have already talked to about it. Opinions on it would be appreciated...
