Poping out of 5th and hard to get in R

Well driving to work today(50 miles) all of a sudden my shifter poped out of 5th. I was wtf and put it back in. Well if I accelerated some it would pop out again. So I just put it back in 5th and held it there. It worked for a while but then would pop out on its own. Well after that I slowed down and had a hard time putting it in any gear. Well drove the rest of the way in 4th. After worked I tried to put it into 5th and I could w/ force but it would kind thump(I could feel it through the shifter). When I did this I would then have a hard time putting it in any other gear. Also now I have a really hard time getting it into R. Everyother gear is good and i had no other problems at all w/ my tranny before this. Please tell me its a easy fix like my shifter cable or something. I just got done puting 600 in my dsm cause of a timing jump and I have had this car for less than a month. Sorry if this is kinda confusing, I'm on mysecond 12 pack. Thanks

Doesn't sound like any simple fix, sounds like it's time for a rebuild. In my experience I came out $1300 cheaper just buying a used tranny instead of having it rebuilt. ( $600 for used tranny> $1900 quoted price for rebuild ) Then again...maybe it just the syncro's and won't be TOO expensive to fix.
 
i had the same thing happen to me... i had to replace my whole tranny... but the same thing happened to my friend and all his problem was he had to take off the end cap of his tranny and there's a nut that retains some gears back there... his had fallin off... couple of quick turns and he was good to go... hope u weren't like me... and ur like him
 
What the hell... if you don't know what is causing his problem don't just say he needs to have the whole thing rebuilt.

I know for a fact that some people have problems with the 5th gear poping out that is an easy fix.

Take off the cover on the side of the transmission and check the nut onthe 5th gear shaft.

If it is loose that might be your 5th gear problem.

Not being able to get in reverse might be fixed by this too.

It is definantly worth checking out.
 
i JUST had this same problem with 2nd not wanting to stay in gear...i would agree with the above...pull off the outer bell housing right behind the passenger tire and tighten the 36mm nuts back up....30min to an hour tops.

in my case it wasnt that bad so i made the mistake of letting it go until one of the bearing races took a crap...pieces of that got into the main part of the tranny and made a pretty little hole...now after the car being down for a month I still have a small leak, -$150 from my wallet, and a ton of worries....CHECK IT NOW

Let me tell you what I do know! My response was more than just a hypothesis, it was from experience of mine own... not just some people that "I know of". I carried my car to a tranny shop to take it apart and give me an estimate...the crazy $1900 estimate is what I got. So I told them to put it back together. Shortly after I went on a 900mile trip. With about 150 miles left in the trip I noticed the stick would move about a quarter of an inch in 5th if I got on and off the gas. A week later 5th gear went shooting out the side of the transmission all over the highway. I didn't tell him all of this because I figured this would scare him a helluva lot more than just needing a rebuild. There's a lot of outward pressure put on the 5th gear set. If it's popping all the way out of the gear, then it's not that frickin' bolt. If that was the case then the bolt would pretty much be all the way out already, and it wouldn't just be popping out, it'd be shooting out. That's why I stated that it was more than likely the synchros. You may now proceed with putting your attitude in check.
 
not to join the flame war...but my input shaft bolt was slightly loose and the other shafts bearings were shot and mine would just "pop" all the way out of gear....

if he doesnt want to spend the money for a rebuilt/used tranny then he can just replace was is damaged/loose knowing that he will have to do a rebuild in the near future...thats what im saving for.

im probably wrong here...but i thought the synchros primary job was getting the car in and out of gear...not holding them in a gear?
 
Well took the end cover off and WTF, theres no tranny fluid. Well the bolt was somewhat loose so I torque that back down. Last people to touch my tranny was MonkeyWrench so I called them up to bi*** and I'm taking it there tommarrow. I'm hoping to get a new tranny out of this. ####ing oil jockeys, they didn't even tighten my oil filter right.

I apologize for the confusion, I certainly didn't intend for there to be a flame war. Ryan, correct... synchros aren't for holding in gear...but like hero said in his first post, he was now having trouble getting in every gear, that's why I said synchros. Hero, good catch...hopefully everything will work out for ya.
