Does forcing the shifter into 1st at 20mph damage the syncro?

I heard that forcing the car into 1st while you are moving damages the syncro, is that true? Because whenever I'm coming up on a stop sign I push it into 1st as I start to slow down.
 
Damage- no
Wear- yes

It's kind of like slipping the clutch out slowly; no immediate damage, but it does wear things out faster.

Specifically, it wears the tiny oil scraping treads off of the first gear blocker ring (like a small clutch used to synchronize shaft speeds during the shift).
