where the HELL is 3rd gear?

Well fellas/ladies-

I completely lost 3rd gear the other night. don't know where it went but its gone. It feels like a extention of neutral. Nothing there. I mean the shifter goes to the third gear location but then when I step off the clutch no grind, no noise NOTHING. Then after about 20 attempts of trying to get it, Wham there it is????????????? Yeah I actually have it "sometimes" then it just disappears.

Anybody know this sysmtom??? I need a diagnosis so I can decide to go with a completely new JDM Engine/Tranny. To hell with just replacing the "syncro" or the gear or what ever.....I have 105,XXX miles and I would rather have a newer lower mileage combo anyway.

Please let me in on what happened. I lost it WHILE racing a 85' Mercury Capri 5.0, I still won but lost third. It didn't grind or anything, just nothing there.

broken shift fork

OK, DON'T DRIVE THE CAR!!!!! I just killed my tranny the same way, the reason why it won't down shift into 3rd is the start of a bad shift fork. It was happening to me in 3rd, then one day it seemed to shift fine, but then 5min later going into 3rd, the classic fork in the blender!!!! The fork failed and tore up 3rd, 4th, and 5th gear, and broke a whole in the case, get it towed to a tranny shop 400 - 600 for a rebuild, is alot better than 1400 or more for a new tranny!!!!!!
