Halifax,
Hey guys I am in desperate need of some help here. I just bought a 90 Talon TSi. The engine was totally rebuilt, turbo is good, just about everything else has been replaced with new and performance parts but my dilemma is this...

When you start the car, push the clutch in and pull the shifter into 2nd gear it grinds. Im told it may have something to do with the car being a 90 and having a 92 transmission in it and still with the 90 linkage and cables. So clutch in, shifter in netural, grab for second... grind, take shifter out of second (with clutch still in car not moving) and go to netural, then go back to 2nd every thing is fine. Master and slave have been replaced, clutch fork and pivot ball are new, new fluid...

Could it be the clutch itself maybe?

I absolutly LOVE this car, and want it working the way its suposed to. Can anybody offer up a reason for my problem...?

Thanks, Darren.

Yes it could be the clutch, but the linkage is different between the 90 model and later models. Check to make sure your master and slave are working, and that your clutch fork is actually moving.

I tried to put a 92 tranny in my 90 and I could not get the shifter linkage right. I adjusted the cables and even drilled the shift arms on the tranny all in an attempt to use a 92 tranny without having to change my linkage. Unfortunetly, I could never get it so that all the gears would shift properly, so I pulled it out.

Are you sure you have the 90 linkage? Also, as far as I know if the 92 shift arms were changed to 90 shift arms then the 90 linkage should work. I was never able to verify this because I could not get one of my 90 shift arms off.

Ya,

What I am calling the shift arm is actually 2 differnet parts. The shift lever, and select lever. These levers are differnet between the 90 and laters. What I tried to do was swap the levers off the 90 onto the 92. But I could not get the 90's off. The 92 came off easly. There are dowel pins that hold the levers on that have to be pressed or punched out. The 90 broke my punches. So in the end I was never able to verify if 90 levers on a 92 trans will allow the 90 shifter linkage to work properly. Does anybody know if this will work? Cause if it wont then you'll need to switch shifters.

Check this pick out.

These arms can be removed and replaced. Unfortunetly it can be a real PITA.

Even the braket that holds the cables to the tranny is different between the 90 and later models.

i would see about getting the clutch adjusted first ... i have a 93 tranny (awd) on my 90 ... you have to keep the 90 linkage and cables otherwise the tranny won't work right either 1st-4th or 2nd-reverse. it could be an actually tranny problem. i would also find out what kind of gear oil was used and possibly trying something like QS/Pennzoil synchromesh/GM synchromesh, BG synchroshift, or redline gear oil (though i heard redline isn't as good and it wears our trannies out faster).
