when finishing up the knock sensor stuff on my 91 TSI AWD i noticed fluid on the tranny, seemed to be coming from the clutch slave cylinder, but it smelled like gearbox oil. i dont know if the clutch fluid is the same as gearbox oil or not or smells similar so that is my question. gonna replace the slave cylinder while i'm down there fixing the leak whatever it is. any thoughts on what it could also be would be appreciated. have been working and school so much havn't had any spare time to check it out. so can i get tranny fluid coming out of the clutch slave cylinder or there abouts?

While you're in there also check the seal where the shift rod goes into the tranny. Maybe tranny fluid is leaking from there and running down the front.

Pull off the boot that goes around the clutch fork and see if the fluid is coming from inside the bellhousing. If it is you might need a new input shaft seal, tho that seal will also ooze oil out of the clutch inspection cover.

"clutch fluid" in reality is brake fluid. And there is no possible way to get gear oil to where you are talking about unless it runs there. Or the out put shaft is leaking. I would check that the drain plug it tight firstalong the tranny to that point firstsince it seems the be the lowest part of the tranny.

yes i think it's the seal around the slave cylinder shaft, or the drin plug cause ALL the work the PO had done was extremely shotty. anybody ever seen a OBV that only vents to atmosphere JB welded on?
tomorrow i am going to take off the end case and tighten those 36mm imput shaft nuts. hopefully will make a big improvement in my shifting.

my car was dripping gear oil from there, i just pulled the tranny and the bellhousing is all wet inside, so i think that the pressure plate was spitting it up onto the clutch fork and it was leaking out of that boot. ANYONE GOT ANY IDEAS.

There are three seals in the bellhousing. The tranny input shaft, center diff shaft, and the rear main crank seal. If it's the rear main seal there will be oil on the back side of the flywheel, too. Hopefully you don't have a crack in the bellhousing. Sometimes an abused front diff will wear a groove in the case which shows up around the bellhousing first.

All the seals were just replaced when i rebuilt the tranny, and engine. I dont think that its cause the seals are bad, it must be bacause i overfilled the tranny, otherwise i am not sure.
