Im looking at this car that this guy is selling and here is my question. Is it possible to blow the tranny if its a 91 tranny in a 90 motor(eagle talon tsi)? this guy that is selling his talon which im sure it is a 90 but he said his motor is rebuilt with about 1k miles on it. He said that he didnt beat on the car cuz he was still breaking the motor in, anyways he said that he blew 5th gear right out of the case and he said it was because the shift linkages were two different sizes. is this possible?

The 90 shifter is different from the 91-94 shifter, but it won't cause 5th gear to blow out the cover. 5th gear is held on by a really big nut torqued to about 95 lbs-ft. There's no way you could break it just from pushing on the shifter, even if the shifter doesns't match the tranny. It is possible for the nut to come loose and break the cover if it's not tightened and stamped in place. See VFAQ.com "shifter movement fix"
