Are G-tech's accurate?

my car is completely stock, except for holes i drilled in the bottom half of the airbox. I have had it for about 4 months. The other day we decided to try out my friend G-tech. I must suck ass at launching because my first run i smoked the tires and got a 16.68 @ 88.7. The second run i launched at maybe 1,000 rpm's and got a 16.87 @ 89.8. Then my friend jumped in the car and got a 15.9 @ 92.7. I think i just need to practice launching. This is my first five speed car since my 85' topaz when i was 17. Anyway are these decent times for a stock GST? Thanks.

Yes they are fairly accurate, no those aren't good times that you pulled. I pulled quicker times in my GS. You should be pulling closer to a mid to low 15 if your car is running right.

The main thing with the G-tech is that they have to be perfectly flat on the mount, and also the road you run it on in order to get a good reading. Also, they are only accurate for the ET. The MPH is WAY off.

FWIW my friend hooked up his at the drag strip to compare and it was only off by .05 on his ET. That is fairly accurate IMHO.

My personal experience w/ gtech's are not good... Axle hop really through it off... My HP varied from 90hp - 270hp... Not very good if you ask me...

BTW- my stock '97 Tsi Fwd ran a 15.87 @87mph ~ 5200ft. above sealevel (Denver, CO - Bandimere)

My friend got a 15.2 in his WRX with a shitty launch and shifting @ 6 RPM. I'd say they're pretty close. Torque and MPH is way off though.

Popular Mechanics used one in it last issue to test a build up of an old stang, so they couldn't be too bad IMO if Popular Mechanics felt it was sufficient.

yeh...they are pretty acurate...the MPH is okay...not WAY off but not very close all the time either.

Your times are horrible. What are you trying to launch at? 1000? Try launching around 3000-3500. Then you have to shift FAST...and, you should see a big improvement in your times. But then...maybe your car does have a problem...very possible there is a boost leak...they aren't uncommon and when I had one it effected my times by about 1-1.2sec in the quarter

When you have a boost leak you usually shoot black smoke from the exhaust right ?

i got a 15.3 in englishtown in my spyder bone stock (which weight aprrox. 200 lbs more than the regular GST). You really need to practice how to launch and shift

My friend ran 15.3 at the track and 14.8 on the g tech in his gti V6. Id say the track would be more accurate because i dont think a VW gti V6 would run a 14.8

Hes been talking mad shit now because his g tech said he ran 14.8 and he was tellin me that it was more accurate than the track. I really dont see how that could be

I know a guy that ran like 13.8 in civic hb with gtech and ran same E.T. on track but his mph was way off with the gtech. It was like 10-15 mph off.
