what kind of tires are you using? Regular radials such as some Yokohama ES100's or something comparable or are you using a type of drag radial such as a Nitto 555R or a BFG DR? And from some experienced individuals what is your opinion on the breaking point, ie: the point where you have exhuasted radial tires and need to move to a DR because of too much wheel spin(on an AWD)?

Also, how many of you are pretty much using stock components in your tranny(awd)? And who here is running what kind of respectable times with a stock tranny.

Thanks

On my car I was running crappy Kuhmo 712s 245/40/17 ZR up until VERY recently. I clicked off a bunch of a few low 11.2-11.3s at between 130-131 with a 1.9 60ft. Problem is the car is VERY inconsistent. I must have a dozen or more 12.0@127 slips. That is the whole reason I went to a DOT slick was because I know I can be in the high 10s if I could just cut a 1.6 60. I found the Kuhmos worked decent when I was at my 117 traps on pump gas level. Now I can spin them in 3rd even on pump gas. I don’t think there is any real level where you HAVE to switch tire types. Im sure a 14b car could benefit nicely from the rims and tires I have.

My suggestion would be to get a 7.5 or 8inch wide rim so you can run a 245 width tire. At that point whatever tire you do decide on will be wide enough to at least provide reasonable grip. You would be surprised at the traction difference between 225s and 245s. At that point its up to you what tire you want to run. You can run BFGs or maybe the Yokahoma race tires and have really nice traction but they are very expensive and have no real tread life. I made a decision to get a dedicated set of track tires and rims. This way when Im on race gas and all setup I have the best possible traction I can have and I don’t wear them away driving to and from work. FYI looking at the pricing I got both sets of rims and tires for what you would get a 4 Michelin Pilots or BFG KD Tas. Haha not really but those tires are EXPENSIVE. Too much so to run every day.

There is very few parts available for the DSM tranny. In my 131 mph trapping car I am using factory everything except shift forks and a modified stock center diff aka 4 gear spyder diff. Was that your question? Or did you mean how far can your 100k old tranny take you? If that’s the case worn syncros make for missed or slow shifting which kills ET. If you want to see 10 sec slips some day the whole run has to be perfect you cant have any grinding.

I run Nitto NT555R's. Anything over 490whp in an AWD car will chew through normal radials. Hell, even my drag radials leave pieces of debris on my fenders. As for tranny, I run stock everything except shift forks, and a welded centre diff.

Car does 11.3@122-126mph. Did hit 129mph way back in May, but my valvesprings called it quits after that.

thanks for the replies! I'm just trying to get an idea of what else I am looking at to reach my goals. You guys give me a good idea of where I can be without moving to DR's, although having two sets of tires is ideal.

As far as the tranny subject, thats fine, all I need to knwo for now.

Have you considered BFG KD's they offer excelent traction and can be daily driven or autocrossed!

I looked around a little bit at some tires but since I am not ready to purchase a set of DR type tires just yet I havn't seriously looked into pricing and sizes. Plus I plan to get a new set of wheels so that may alter my decision.

im planning on getting BFG kdw's when i get some rims, i couldnt hit any decent 60ft's last time at the track. My best short time was 1.8, the track i was at doesnt prep at all and is notorious for terrible traction, anything harder and i would spin really bad, i think tires or a better prepped track would help alot
