Went to the opening day at firebird raceway in boise idaho last night.

Car ran pretty good up till the last 2 runs. Anyway, 1st run was with my new M&H slicks and I did not know how they were going to hook up, so I only launched the car at 3500rpm (did'nt want to break any axles LOL), So for the 1st run of the day, I wanted to do a shake down pass to work out all the bugs in the car.
here are the results for the 1st run

15lbs of boost only!!! (low ass boost)
egt's never went past 800c (pig ass rich)
[email protected]!!
60ft. time was a crappy 2.053 (FWD)

I was pretty amazed with the time I got with only 15lbs of boost and running that damn rich.

Second pass I turned the boost up to 18lbs of boost (still working out bugs)

results are
18lbs of boost!!
egt's only hit 820c (again rich as hell)
[email protected] MPH!!
60ft. 1.947 (alittle better) spun the slicks through 1st and 2nd gear.

That run felt very nice and smooth, although I was still running on the rich side. SO I figured it was time to lean things out a bit and crank it up to 28lbs of boost, this is were the car really pissed me off. 1st gear felt incredable, got my best 60ft time with a 1.807 spinning the slicks through the 60ft mark, hit 2nd gear and the car started to sputter, hit 3rd and it still was sputtering soooo bad that I just hit the kill switch on the fuel pump and killed the car right before half track, so with the car off and coasting down the track, the car still ran a 13.9@77mph ROFL!!! I couldnt beleive it, that run was heading for a good sLOLid 11 second run, but the spitting and sputtering kept me from doin so:(
The run after that was the same problem after making some adjustments on the FP and AFC settings, nothing changed, still sputtered at high boost.

I have not been able to find the problem, no boost leaks, datalogger showed not a singal sign of the problem, plugs looked really good, so I dunno what the hell was going on. So after the last run I just packed up and went home as I did not want to hurt the motor. I'm sure when I find the problem I will go back out and bring home a good solid 11 second slip.

Wow! Those look like good times to me :thumb: for running low boost. I'm sure you'll figure it out and drop those times!

I just went to the track for the first time in my AWD on Saturday using the tuning techniques I've been learning from you, and I came home with a best of [email protected] on 91octane with 2gallons of 100octane mixed in to bring the knock down. Remember I'm at 5000+ elevation. I added a spacer onto my external wastegate housing to allow me to run lower boost but it was only enough to lower me to 18-19PSI. Next time I'll run straight racing gas and turn up the boost:) .

Good luck and thanks for all your help!

Great times evil!!! If you were trapping 116 at only 18psi then Im sure 120+ are in you future with some mroe boost/tuning. And if you hook up that shoudl be well in the 11's:thumb: That really is some goos stuff, nice to see some FWD's getting heavy.

Oh and just curious painmaster but how are you only trapping 101 on a 20g with 18-19psi? I just trapped 105 on my 14b a little while ago at aonly 17psi:confused:

Sounds like a classic plug gap problem.

What are your plugs gapped to?

.28 right now, We think we found the problem, the hard wire for the fuel pump was having some issues, so I changed that with new 10gauge wire back to the pump, have not yet tested it but the pump sounds louder now then it did before.

candela,

I think there are a couple of reasons:
1) Need to shift into 2nd faster but tranny wont allow it.
2) High altitude, cars run slower in Albuquerque.
3) Had knock of 13 resulted in slightly pulled timing especially in 3rd gear. Had 14-18 timing throughout run, but I think it needs to be up over 20 for good acceleration. What was yours?
4) Turbo outside of efficiency range, I think?!?

Maybe theres an issue that I haven't identified, I think the next thing I need to do is balance my injectors.

Did you run your car with the 14b in Phoenix, or Albuquerque?

found the problem last night, turned out to be the hard wire to the fuel pump after all, new 10gauge wire was put in place of the old 4 year old wire that I had in there. Car feals twice as strong now and 27-30lbs of boost is no problem now.

I will be heading to the tracks again this upcoming weekend the get that 11 second slip, and not to mention get booted from the track for no cage in the car LOL, oh well, I gotta see what it's going to do. I will post a new thread with the new slips.

1) That sucks that is a classic example of the typical DSM being held back for better times. i feel you I have trouble with 3rd in mine;)

2) Well Im in AZ which is about equal to NM as for altitude ~2k above

3)I didnt check my timing or log anything. I just went to the track and pulled up to the line... I previously logged a few runs the day before and only in 3rd gear ~1-3knock count, which is really irrelevant though

4)18-19psi for a 20g is definetly not out of its efficiency range, thats right when it start to hit its sweet spot. O think like 19-25 for the 20g is pretty good range...

Anyhow Im just curious you know. Its no fault of yours Im just saying that you should find what is holding that turbo/setup back to producing more power (higher traps)

I have to know...

Is munch your name or is it just your little signature saying? Cause I laugh everytime I see it!!

Well we took the car out tonight to do some back road tuning at 27-30lbs of boost, the sputtering problem creeped back on me:mad:

So I started to change some things, and you guys will not beleive what it was, IT WAS MY BRAND F&*KIN NEW MAGNACORE WIRES!!!! I swaped them out with my old set of NGK wires just to see if it would change anything and for sh1ts and giggles, and sure as sh1t, it did, in a HUGE!! way also. My street tires are spining in 4th gear nowOMG Kinda scared the bejesus out of me LOL. Knock level went waaaaay down, and got a sh1t load more timing out of it.
Now I have plenty more room to tune on the afc.

Man I'm going to take this up with magnacore tomorrow, these wires only have like 1400 miles on them, brand new, WTF!!!

All and all, the problem is completly gone, to comfirm this we did 9 hard WOT 1-4 gear pulls (just like I would at the track) and had no issues at all.
Can't wait to see what it will run now at the tracks this up coming sunday. Stay tuned................

Glad to hear it. I'm just getting back to replying to this thread.

I had a feeling it was ignition related. Generally ignition problems rear their head in big boost situations. I speak from first hand experience as I went through hell getting my ignition on my SE-R sorted out running water injection and 20+lbs of boost with a factory ignition designed for NA applications.

Post the results when you get back to the track!

Yup, Munch is my nickname. It's what everyone, including my famliy calls me. It was given to me by one of my old girlfreinds and it stuck like glue. This goes back like 15 years. I'm now 30.

Kinda good to know that you are running decent times and the car isn't really up too par. As for the magnecore wires. I have heard of that happening a few times. Kinda strange that they cost so much and they just crap out on ya. I bought Jacobs wires because of those issues.
