What's the best rpms to launch a GST?

Yeah my car is just stock for now.. Cuz i just recently went to the track and ran a 15.7 and thats a 3000 feet of elevation.. And so when i launched it at around 3000 the car would like burn out crazy style.. So i was wondering what would be a good one.. what do u mean by feather? like clutch it , but not all the way???

i would launch a little lower and harder than 3000. at those rpm's you gotta let the clutch out kinda slow and its not cool having to replace one every month. keeping the rpm's lower arround 2250 and 2500 you will be able to dump a little more than slip also get better traction. only problem is a higher risk of boggin down. its only happened to me like 5 or 6 time and i've had my car a year.

I tried launching my gst at around 3000 rpms and i get way too much wheel hop.. What do you guys recommend?

you guys launch fwd cars at 4500!? what does your clutch do to deserve this? Are you using slicks cause i cant street tires grabbing at 4500. if your gonna make it slip let it do it from arround 2500. if you do it right you get no wheel hop and very little spin. :thumb:

Yeah your very right. i tried launching my car at about 3000 i got nasty wheel hop, so since then ive been launching at around 2500 rpms, i gotta work on my reaction time too.. Aight man.. Thx. Peace!

u got use to launching ur gts higher didnt u larry? thats why u were use to launching high.. i remember the first time i launched my gst.. i thought it was my gts.. did the 4-5k slip.. drop.. (gts style).. all i did was spin.. LOL.. something the celica didnt have.. low end torque and power..

With my ACT 2600 I launch at 4.5-4.75k or i will bog big time. On the stock clutch I did 3-3.5k. I don't know how anyone with an ACT 2600 can do a GST launch at 3k. I stall out when I tried a 3k launch. Couldn't imagine a 2.5k launch.

i feather at 3500-4000 then slip it out. for FWD you really have to find out what works best for you.

you are all talking about the clutch.... tire/road condition is the most important factor in the launch... your launch is a lot different on a hot day with slicks than it is on a cold day on old asphault with street tires...

agreed. Last couple of times I went to the track I was able to get consistant 2.1's and I was revving to about 5k and slipping the clutch out. At 3k I would bog really bad and get 2.4+.

Really it all depends on what you are most comfortable with...

Very good information on that link! Thank you Matt! I've read it a couple timesin the past, but it has been awhile. It is right on the money!

The first thing you will learn about launching a FWD is that it all depends on your situation -- weather, temperature, your mods, your horsepower, your suspension, and last but not least your TIRES! Yes, your tires will make that much of a difference. Even with a nice limited slip differential in the front (Quaife), you will only spin unless your tires aren't meant to grip. Also try lowering the tire pressure at the track; 15-16lbs works for me. Anyway, everyone's situation will be different.

Launching at 4500? I WISH! On slicks, yes; on street tires, no. Read the information on that link above. Slipping the clutch that long may work for a few of you, however, the clutch will not last long at all with that severe abuse! (THAT'S what that smell was?!?!) I've had the same street disk since I bought my ACT2600 hundreds of 1/4 mile passes ago -- not to mention the 30,000 daily driver miles. Did I have the best 60ft times? They were 2.1-2.3 seconds usually -- not bad for a 16G on street tires.

Upgrade your suspension. DO NOT let your wheels HOP!!! You WILL throw pieces of your front differential through the bell housing on your tranny case! Trust me I'm still paying for my new transmission! Get the polyurethane motor mount inserts and suspension bushings. They will prevent that nasty wheel hop and they are worth whatever you pay for them. Get adjustable shocks and stiffen those puppies all the way in the rear. Will it ride like shit on the street? YES! Will it reduce the transfer of weight from your front (drive) wheels during that hole shot? YES! Just turn them up when you want to launch your baby off the line. Turn them down when you are cruising with no intention to race. (Who does that!?) They help. Get some stiff springs for the back as well.

Don't let those AWD guys fool you. Launching a 400+ HP FWD on street tires is not the piece of cake they might think it is. Give me a full weight AWD with 400 WHP and street tires and I will be in the 11's -- FIRST TRY! Let someone who has never driven a FWD DSM try and say that about a full weight 400+ HP FWD! 'Nuff Said.

Ok well, sorry for turning this into a seminar. Hmm. Maybe a seminar on launching our FWD's wouldn't be such a bad idea?!?! :thumb:

Peace

How do you launch at 3k without bogging out? I cut 2.2-2.3 on streets at 4.5k and it doesn't seem as if I'm slipping that much, perhaps I'm doing a quick slip borderline dumping it? When I try a 3k launch I cut 2.4-2.6 and a have to slip it longer to keep it from bogging out and it kills my ET everytime. It's probably pratice.

duno if this has been said probly has.. but it depends on the tires, wear and tear on the car and of corse how much whp... i know though for a stock TSI and rims tires etc.. around 4,500rpm is good.. but of corse a well moded car would be lower..

Really? I thought they primarily helped with body roll for canyon carving. How do they help?

They don't eliminate wheel hop. In essence, the front sway bar keeps the wheels from fighting each other; when one goes up, so does the other and vice versa. That way the front differential is not getting all twisted and confused. This doesn't eliminate wheel hop, but possibly saves the front differential.
BTW.. check out this link. Gotta love NABR!

Peace

Never said it eliminates wheel hop, but it helps. After I installed a front strut bar on my car, it reduced wheelhop quite a bit, but I still get it every now and then.

Well that information alone is worth kicking out the $30 for a strut bar. Even if it doesn't help wheel hop but, it reduces damage to the driveline its worth it IMHO. Thanks for the info!
