At what point does AWD need drag radials?

Obvious answer would be when you start spinning.
But really whenever you want them, to my knowledge they dont hurt performance or anything

It depends not only on the tires but the driver and engine mounts. Stiff mounts will help keep traction and so will knowing how to launch. My friend went 10's without too much spinning because of his driving. Also, you want a little spin.

Depends on what your going for.

Im using MT ET Streets in a 235/60/15 on a 15x7.5 TE37, and for long trips i have my stock 17's with good all season tires that do just fine.

Also keep in mind a welded diff dsm will take a little more to loose traction from acceleration than a non welded diff car. Your driving style and tires and vehicle weight and suspension will also play a big role after that in how well you can hook.

Going straight with decent road conditions, I have full traction on my e316g setup with a "conservative" estimate of 300-310awhp & ft/lbs of torque. Its a high 11 sec car on pump now, but the only time traction is truely a problem for me at the momment is on the launch, especially when launching on the street, and in that case it doesnt take much effort to spin all fours and even continue spinning into 2nd even with my welded diff.

I dont think thats enough to need drag radials though, once I can do a rolling 2nd gear pull and spin thru 2nd gear then I will invest in drag radials...
Keep in mind at the track it will hook a little better especially if theres good track prep but go deep enough into the 11s and you may be wanting some drag radials or youll be one of those guys with low 11 sec E.T but a low 10 sec trap speed...
Thats my take.

When your car starts doing this...:)

I broke the tires loose in all 4 gears running 11.30's-10.90's. First gear was the worst of course, but I like spinning. It saves drivetrain parts. Ive never broken an axle or driveshaft.

id say get slicks when you can afford shep tranny. that much hook and power on a stock tranny will break. garenteed. tranny can handle the power when there is give thuogh the motor mounts down to the tires that break loose. add the super stiffy mounts and slicks, and i promise the tranny will laugh in your face. have the insurance policy of the number one tranny out there. shep. then get the slicks and give 'er hell.

A Shep trans is not a solution for an indestructible drivetrain. A shep trans will break the same as a stock trans really. Its still a Mitsu transmission. A fresh new trans may last longer then an old tired one, but the weakness is the center differential.

When slicks grip, the stress goes elsewhere to the weakest part. Sometimes its an axle, sometimes its a differential.

A shep trans is a rebuilt transmission using the same parts that always break. The point of his transmissions are to be able to shift at super high rpms. Cut a good 60ft on slicks, and eventually you will break something. Ask any transmission builder, they will say that the mitsu transmission is a timebomb no matter what you do to it.

A 600whp dsm on slicks travels with spare transfer cases and differentials. A 600whp street car drives on a real good set of street tires and gets its traction with good suspension, driving, and a good set of street tires. Do you want a race car? or a car you can drive everywhere?

Don't forget shock's and springs That helps stiffen the launch.

That "friend" was me.

1991 Eagle talon first 10 sec run slipping clutc - Car Videos on StreetFire

However, I blew the tires up in 1st gear, but I made the car move to a 1.72 60ft. Each gear spun from a no-lift-shift a tad, but it didnt slow me down too too bad. I trapped 110mph in the 1/8th but lost alot of ET on the top end due to overpowering the tires and the clutch in 4th gear. My previous run was an 11.0 at 133.

Slicks are actually easier on the driveline to launch. It is the slipping and then grabbing traction of street tires that breaks driveline parts. I know a lot of people in the 3s commiunity stop breaking rear axles when the go to slicks and a welded center diff. Stiff mounts also protect your driveline, when your engine/trans is moving around in the engine bay it adds to wheel hop, a known axle/trans killer.

You can use them at any point. I've run the 225-45-17 drag radials for years now. I have had 1/4 mile gains at almost half a second on my near stock talon. My times would bounce between mid to high 13's then I put the radials on and now consistant low 13's. I use the same tires on my 40r drag car, it helps it get into the 1.5s 60' times easy. It all depends on how quick you want to be. I like my cars to hook. And the thing is I really haven't spent alot on drive train parts. And don't install suspension and just run it at the hardest setting that can hurt your 60' ft times.

ive always been under the understanding that the stock motor mounts that give are what aid to a long lasting tranny the whole motor and trans will rock back in the engine bay providing some cushion effect to the internals of the tranny. when the stiffy mounts are added all that load is just transfered to the tranny itself. and as far as i know that helps contrubute to broken parts. (not saying thats true, just saying thats how ive always pictured this)

To much cushion and with enough force it can act like a spring and bounce back. This can cause wheel hop, that's even worse on driverrain parts

wheel hop on a 4 wheel drive? ive had several gsx cars and have never experienced wheel hop. been in civics with decent power and they all tourqe steered and wheel hop'd to beat hell. all the dsm friends i have use the 4wheel drive model. i can honestly say ive never been in a gst. does the ff eclipse hop badly like a honda? ive never felt wheel hop in a 4 wheel drive car...
