Well I finally made it to the drag strip with the 1996 GST Spyder.
Mods:
Hard SMIC Piping
Greddy BOV
T-25 on 16 PSI
Prothane Mounts
B&M Short Shifter
Crappy 205 Tires

Track was cold and it was about 40 Degrees that night, they had Midnight Madness.

Best time

Reaction: .229
60' : 2.41
1/8th : 9.80 @73.5
1/4: 15.1 @ 93.5

Beat a late 90's Lexus with a 2JZ motor, and Focus with a Duratec. Focus ran a 15.5 with just an intake ?!

Got beat by my friends RSX-S , he ran mid to high 14's, then broke his diff. so I won that race LOL.:dsm:

I have a spyder too, ran a 14.2 @ 106 MPH, no traction!!! Had crappy 60ft times...2.6 all day

A limited slip differential (real one) not inserts will make a huge difference. I have a Quaife LSD and I consider it the best mod I have done to my car. Too bad I wasn't able to take my car to the track this past season but come next season a set Hoosiers is on my list.

Also, is your BOV recirculated? and how are you launching the car (rpms)?

BOV is recirculated, and I cannot really remember my exact RPM's. I usually hold it about 3500 and feather out

yeah I feather it too, no matter how light I give it, once I begin to spool, wheel spin. LSD is my next mod for sure!!! Hows that Quaife holding up? So expensive:cry:

I've ran a Quaife for a couple summers & on the street it make a big difference vs the stock open diff but if you want to cut good 60 ft's at the track, slicks or drag radials are still probably going to make the biggest difference. I'm sure my 18" rims with 40 series tires defently weren't helping but the best I could manage was a 2.29. Have had a few in the 2.3's but average is probably still 2.4 or 2.5. Even with an open diff & slicks you should be able to drop that down to 2.0 or maybe less. Hooser drag radials are on the top of my shopping list as well :thumb:

The Quaife is expensive ($1500) but worth the investment. Its too bad Daren my car kept breaking down everytime we wanted to go to the track or else I would have been there. Slicks and LSD hopefully can help achieve good time slips. Turbo is back with PTE getting fixed up and can't wait for the winter to go by fast.

I've been wanting to get drag slicks for the track but what scares me is my diff blowing up if it grabs too well. I want to go with drag radials so I lose traction instead of blowing up my tranny. The car isnt even tuned well and I trapped 106 mph, I'm afraid after tuning it I'll break the diff.

Yeah I think all us FWD have to worry about the pressure we will put on the tranny and axles with using slicks or drag radials. I think one thing we must to do is not lauch hard. Launch at lower rpms and wait till you can feel the tires grip.

I usually launch at about 3500 RPM. I dont know how it is in Canada, but here in SoCal the Honda boys are notorious for closing down a lane because of their "Honda Launch".

Rev it up to 7K
Dump the clutch,
spill tranny fluid on the track...

Yeah 3500 is good point but then again every car is different. I'd say try going up to about 4000 and slip the clutch. Only go about 60-75 % throttle in first and adjust in second seeing how the car is. Lauching is a skill and can only be learned with practice.

Ya I'm sure our tranny/diff/half shafts would suffer the same fate if you launched at 7000 rpms with slicks but theres no way Im going to find out ;)

Some say drag radials can actually be harder on the stock open diff as there more likely to hop vs slicks, which is what takes out a stock diff faster then anything. As long as you keep to the smaller sized slicks, such as 24.5" tall you should be fine as long as you don't rev it up nice & high & just drop the clutch. Now if you get into taller slicks, such as a 26" tall tire, these have been known to break things as you have to launch much higher to prevent the car from bogging out. If I could run 15" wheels, I'd go with slicks but because Im limited with my big brakes, I'll be going Hoosier drag radials with 16's. Hopefully they cut my 60's to something more resonable, I'll be happy with anything sub 2.0's, to get the car into the mid/low 12's on pump tune, where it belongs.

with my trap speed, i know I can get into the 12's, just need to hook. It makes sense what you're saying about drag slicks, I was looking into running 16 in. rims. I'll try the hoosiers, what size rims you guys recommend, as far as width is concerned? When I had my t25 I was getting 2.2 60 foot times, then as I went bigger, I got slower 60 fts, but faster et's and higher trap speeds.

Cant wait to get a spyder into the 12's:sneaky:

I'll keep practicing the launch, luckily here in SoCal we have year round tracks open. Every Thursday there is a 1/8 mile track open, good for practicing the launch.

Sorry for stealing the tread

For the Hoosier 225/50/16 (what I'll be running) they recommend a 7" rim width as the min required. The rims I picked up are BSA 16 x 7", think the style is 176, their a clean looking 5 spoke & painted them satin black to sorta go with the back rims.

60's are just killing my times & the fact that even though I run less boost in second (& of course 1st), usually around 18 psi, I still usually end up breaking lose or have to feather the throttle. I'm currently trapping at 113 but I'm sure if I can get first to hook abit better & run higher boost & hook in second I should be able to gain a couple mph, without too much issue, still running the same tune. My goal is mid 12's @ 115, which for that kind of traps still isn't that quick of an ET (its possible to run like a 12 flat or even high 11 at that trap with proper traction) but don't want to set my goals to high, anything is better then 13.6's @ 113 :coy:

Remember a tenth slower on the 60ft usually nets you two tenths on the other end.

I can attest to this being true. I had drag radials and the wheel hop was so bad my stock diff exploded. I fixed it with a karking lsd and went back with slicks and its all the difference in the world. Slicks will not wheel hop.

slicks came in today 24.5x15x8 was wondering if people use this tires with tubes or if I can mount it like a normal tire?
