After work tonight i asked some kid that works with me if he wanted to race his truck....hes gotta 2000? Dakota R/T 5.7 with some work done to it exhaust intake a cpl other little things...so we leave work after warming our cars up in 10 degree F weather go to a light wait on the shoulder for it to turn red from cars pullin out....turns red we pull out...im in the left hes in the right ...light turns green i didnt put the rpms up too high cus its pretty cold out the roads are still covered in salt and my tires are probably hard as hell....so we start goin my wheels spun through 1st slammed second wheels sput til about mid way though finnay some traction....hes got like a car length ahead of me threw it into 3rd high rpms 3rd i was closing the gap....threw it in 4th my front bumper was right at his rear bumper and the merge ahead of us was closing for a 1 lane bridge so i locked up breaks and let him go...i think that if we had gone past 100 i woulda taken him....i dunno what speed we were at but it was up there i think i coulda taken him but i ran outa road.....i was kinda pist but i gave him props after racin him and i asked him if he wanted to go from a roll and he said na hell be alright....and then i left wishin i had awd...does anyone know what i can do for better traction like would stiffer suspension/ coilovers? any of that help? by the way alls i have on is intake and i just keep thinkin of i add more stuff to make my car quicker im just gonna have less and less traction? am i right? what should i do?

my guess would be a LSD unit (limited slip differential) im gonna see if i can get one before summer starts. if i cant then im screwed for the next 2 years as i will be strapped with more schooling and work. wheelspin sucks.

You should of smoked him, those Dakotas are slow as shit.....

With inatke and exhaust they can pull low 14s not so slow ehh....oh yeah the engine you were looking for is 5.9 the 5.7 is the new hemi and wasnt offered in 2000. If it was a 5.2 even 2wd Im ashamed of you please sell your car now, if it was a 5.9 with mods Im not suprised.

Low 14s ? wow , im impressed, thats moving for a truck. But then again they may be fast in the 1/4 but im sure on the highway our GST's would be able to run them down easily.

Just looked up thier stats and it says the 2001 5.9 R/T did 0-60 in 6.5 seconds and the 1/4 in 15 seconds flat. Not bad , thats actually a really good race for us.

Yeah I know from experience...I raced a guy who has basic bolt ons and a 5.9 and we were pretty close...but still its a truck(2wd but still a truck). On the highway very little can compete with the likes of a fwd dsm or supra...sop yeah Id have to agree once the 100 mark hits bye bye truck.:thumb:

yea it is 5.9 i dont even kno why i said 5.7 we were at like 90 he thinks i wasnt really watchin my speed i was just watchin the road but i was definitely catchin up to him i woulda prob had my rear bumper at his front by time i hit 110 but i defintiely gave him an impressive run he was shocked that a 4cyl was about to "bend his truck over its knee n give it a a$$ spankin..u guys still havent told me if i stiffin suspension will give me better traction?

Its should, because the car won't lean back under hard accleration

na thats all confusing....stick with lowerin the car stiffer suspestion...benifts...better traction lower center of gravity looks better...handles better the list goes on n on plus i still wanna be able to spin wheel when i want...spinnin wheel in the water's the best man steam shootin up behind you from the water heating up....gotta love it

lsd does not eliminate tire spinning, just improves traction because you get a better power spread to both wheels. when you do a burn out peeps won't be shouting peg leg. Plus where I live roads suck and lowering isn't good since the car already hits and a stiffer suspension would be a nightmare over all the bumps. The summer isn't as bad since the roads are in better shape.
So for me I'd rather add sway bars for handling and an LSD for traction.
Basically, to each his own. Everyone wants slightly diffrent things out of their cars. Happy modding! :thumb: :dsm:

whenever I used to race on the highway in my trans am rwd or fwd talon when I stage I would do a nice little burn out that way you clean up the shit underneath and on the tires, plus you warm them up a bit. give it a toot. You will be suprized.

fyi a 5.2 regular cab, short bed, 5 speed is actually faster than the 5.9 automatic only R/T in the 1/4.

u can prob mod a 5.9 more than the 5.2...either way i woudla had him i just ran outa road he had a lot better traction...a cpl weeks ago he snapped his back right axle on I-95 did a 360 in the rain and slammed into the wall...hes okay not a scratch on him but the truck is totaled i think dodge is givin him another one but for now im the fastest car at work:thumb:

I think you should practice driving your car more don't give it to much gas out of the hole learn to control your wheels from spinning. I take those trucks almost all of the time(depending on mods ofcourse). You have to really baby your car off the line give it enough throttle to the point where your wheels are about to start spinning but don't push it all the way, you will have enough traction when you shift into 2nd so u really can get on it. And don't take it the wrong way I am not trying to say you can't drive your car im just saying that more practice will make you better.

its hard to practice tho...cant just go around spinning wheels ya kno...i have a decent launch...ull never see me stalling or spinning the wheels til the have no more tread...well maybe the second one just once ina while for fun...but i got smoooked off the start form the truck he had something done to it that gives him a fk load of low end torque i forget what it was...but i woudlt trade top end speed for the world...whats more embarassing...taking off real slow due to no traction or other possible reasons..and still takin ur car til approx 140...or taking off like a bat outa hell and shuttin down at 100 115.....n when i say shuttin down i dont mean car just stoppin...i mean just not havin the power like u did on take off...didnt want an argument startin cus of that...

If i'm not REALLY concentrating on the launch I almost always get pulled a bit off the line...by almost anything. You had a few factor working against you there. The cold weather and you being fwd, and him being rwd. If it's really cold or if even a drop of rain has hit the ground, I won't race no matter what...because all I'll do is spin and lose. In rain, even in 2nd, once boost comes on I start spinning. So I'm trying to race, I'm feathering the gas just trying to quit spinning, all the while getting pulled. I'd rather not try and preserve SOME pride, as to look like I'm really trying only to lose because I'm spinning. Quick story: back in Va there was a guy in a blue se-r spec v. It had been raining and I was going home. This guy comes up next to me at the light and starts revving on me. I'm like, "Oh hell no he idn't!" Light turns green we go...well... I spin, he goes. Turns out he's on the same base I was, a couple days later he comes up to me while I'm getting gas on base and starts talking shit, how he thought my car would be quicker but it was slow. I don't say shit, I just say lets go again. He's all, "sure...you're loss!" and starts laughing at me. It was sunny and dry that day, oooooooooooh. We get to the light, the road is empty in our direction. It's about a 1/2 mile from the light to where we agree to call it. Light hits green. I get a good launch, spin a bit at the top of 1st, and get a good, clean shift in 2nd and just start pulling on him. I had him by 7-8 cars by time we get to the finish point. I slow down to speed limit to let him catch up... he doesn't even look over, just keeps going all pissed off looking. I'd see him alot on the road after that, but he "never saw me" anymore. But after I got my suspension and better tires, my traction is alot better...even in first.

10 degree F weather

There's a big reason you were spinning right there. The road was cold, your tires were cold. At least you warmed you engine up before trying this. There's just no way to hook up well like this. Suspension work and harder bushings in the motor mounts will help at the track when there's lots of traction and wheel hop is your enemy but given the above conditions, I don't know how you're going to hook it. Heck, my GST spins in 3rd gear from a roll when it's cold outside.

i thought they cut off at like 120 ill have to ask him if his cuts off it is a 99 so i dunno what year ur friend is...either way trucks die at 100+ trucks are for towing crap cars are for driving racing w/e u wont see an eclipse pullin a small boat......u might see an r/t pullin a small boat....either way if i woulda had maybe 5 more seconds of road i coulda passed him

my friend has a 2001, i wanted to race him but never got a chance, and now he threw a supercharger on it. But yea, ask for a re-run with your friend when he gets the new one, and make sure it's warm outside. Good luck with your race man.
