So i'm sure a few of you have seen my thread in the newbie forum Mr. BlackForest Co even posted on it LOL. but to sum it all up. I have a 90 tsi awd 5sp that is torn into pieces. I have no idea what all it needs to get going. I don't know any dsm'ers that are willing to take a few hours of their time to try and go over some things with me. I got the car as a tow away. Was told it probably had bent valves. Tore the engine apart and cant find a damn thing wrong with it. I know that it definately had a problem, but not sure what the problems were. I should have done more investigation before i tore it apart. I live in Aurora off i225. And the car is located about 15 minutes east of me at a friends parents house. Plenty of room. I have a whole shed pretty much to myself with all my parts layed out in it. They have 2 acres and they really are the coolest people ever but the car has been sitting for 2 years and I need to get it out of there. If anybody knowledgeable with dsm rebuilds is willing to help me go over some things it would be very much appriciated! I can supply transportation, food, drink, smoke or whatever it takes. Thanks guys. And i'll post a few pics so you know what i'm workin with haha.

Balance shaft belt was in 1 piece when I pulled the engine. It was pretty brittle and broke after the engine was already out.

Also, when I originally sold this car to my friend it had stock wheels and tan leather interior. When I got the car back it had 4 black dummy wheels and black and grey cloth interior. Once I know the car is running, I am going to be looking for stock wheels and tan leather to get it back to the way it was :D

Have you removed the valves and roll-checked them to see if they aren't bent? In your pics the pistons, rods, and crank are all still installed. Have you since removed those to check the bearings?

I have, and I have... Well.. I pulled all the valves and rolled em on a flat surface. from what I can tell they are all straight as can be. And I pulled the rods and pistons. Loosened the crank but never completely removed it. I Did pull the rod bearings out. They don't appear to be too bad. Minor scuff marks, but no major grooves or any signs of damage other than normal wear. As far as i know, these are the original bearings with 202,000 miles on em. Possibly seen a rebuild in its early days but I don't think so. I originally purchased the car from a older lady roughly 10 years ago around 100,000. Single owner, Garaged its whole life. Taken really good care of. She told me what she had to do to the car and basically replace transmission, clutch, and other than that it was just normal maintenance.

To add to what spyderdrifter is saying:
THere is an article here somewhere about checking ring damage with head off. Basically you turn the crank untill all four pistons are level with each other, than take some used (but clean) oil and pour some on top of every piston. Put equal amounts in every cylinder, let's make it 1" deep (use a ruler or any marked stick to make sure levels are same in all four). Let it sit for a day or two and compare how much oil leaked out of each cylinder. Lower the level, more damage there is to the rings/pistons/cylinders.

You are awesome man, thanks for the input. It's kinda 1 of those things like "the most undetected things are right in front of your face" type situations

Could it have been a bad diagnosis? Maybe it just died. And someone assumed the dsm bent the valves seeing as it does happen often due to neglect with these cars. I have purchased cars that "had bent valves" just to find something simple to beat fault . Just my two cents...

Thats exactly what im starting to think. The guy I got it from drove the SH*T out of it!!!! He is rough on cars. I dont know wtf i was thinkin LOL. but... I went out today and cleaned and started to reassemble the motor. cant find a damn thing wrong with it

Well, toss some good headstuds and a nice headgasket on it and put her back together. Could polish the crank and put some bearings in the bottom end since its apart. And then we its all back together figure out why it died in the first place.
