Illegal Exhaust

Hey guys, I was just wondering if anyone got pulled over for their exhaust. I know its illegal in the state of VA to modify exhaust in ANY way. But today was the first time I actually got pulled over for it...The cop was nice enough to let me go, but if its frequent Im debating on whether or not I should go back to a stock set up.
Let me know what you guys think

In the state of va for inspection purpose only a converter is required no muffler but it is illegal to operate on the road without a muffler and it is up to the officers discretion for the noise inspection doesn't concern noise level but they can pull you if they think its too loud pretty stupid huh there is no set db reading that I've heard of

Some aftermarket companies like magnaflow make a nice sounding high performance muffler that when mounted properly almost looks like the factory exhaust but flows like a straight pipe. Look into it. I got mine from jegs or something for around $50.

I got my illegal exhaust ticket in Annandale driving a car w/ out of state tags by a girl Fairfux County cop. Was doing nothing else illegal except driving a car w/ too shiny an exhaust system.

Was pulled over beside a parking lot used by illegal immigrants to mingle waiting for odd jobs. Me, the taxpayer gets a $95 ticket while 30 illegal people watch. I love this country. Somebody has to pay for the lavish new Fairfux courthouse.

I used to have a pretty low profile deep tone Magnaflow muffler, it looked really good and probably stock. Since we don't have modified laws in Utah (That I know of) I got an Hks Hi-power muffler to replace it since it's a little more shiny

After searching the forum a little longer, ive been reading this more and more. I forgot to post in the orginal post, that I'm going to be targeting low 300 awhp. So an oem exhaust is almost out of the question. But want to have as little attention drawn to me by law enforcement. The car also has no cats ( straight pipe) which Im going to be getting rid of. So now Im in search of a quiet high performance exhaust, that looks stock, it sounds like the magnaflow your talking about. Ill have to look into that

it depends on the cop mostly my talon n/a i had a header no cat a 2.5 exhaust with a hks hi-power muffler and 3/4 i was pulled over. in my opinion it depends on the car. never see a v8 pulled over for it or motorcycle or street-bike.and any v8 that gets pulled over i hear them brag about how they got let off because the cop liked the way it sounded. i think its bull and what goes for one group of cars should go for all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You know what? I've never completely realized that, but that is so true. Another thing your right about is it depending on the cop. I've had an exhaust system on my 370z for two years and never once got pulled over for it, and I know that the cops know it is an aftermarket exhaust.

My DSM is straightpiped so a exhaust ticket is better than the impound. Dumb girl cop police training consisted of pull over ricer cars and get their $. She didn;t even know what manufacturer brand my car was but knew my exhaust was too shiny to be factory. Whatever, I paid the ticket to save myself risking another driving to their imperial courthouse deathstar.

So after copgirl and her police explorer sidekick give me the ticket, they are sitting in the parkinglot doing the paperwork and I pull onto Little River Turnpike in downtown Annandale, 7:30 AM on my way to work. Traffic light is red so I'm sitting there 50 feet from them waiting for the light and already have my ticket. So I rev it to redline opening my atmospheric wastegate and exhaust is roaring straight from the o2 housing, wastegate chirping and blow-off phishing like I'm about to blast off making an ass of myself but got the last laugh. They pulled me over while I was being civilized, want some noise?, hear this! WHAT!

BTW, I have a shop off Eisenhower Ave and can weld you up whatever exhaust you want. Need someone to build your engine, block or heads, can do that also.

I looked into it a little bit more and they said it has to sound STOCK cannot be any louder than a stock system, the reason they do not pull over V8's and Harleys is because they are loud cars from the factory its really unfair. The law says if you modify it to be louder than stock or if its modified at all it has to be aftermarket that is equal to the stock setup in noise cannot be louder but can be quieter i hate va also have gotten that ticket when i was tagged in a pennsylvania car going to school down here

CUTOUT PIPE FOR THE MFW!

What you do is your standard 3" manderal bent down pipe, to a cutout, and then bolt up the stock cat back to the cutout. That way it looks stock and sounds only slightly more agressive than stock under all normal driving conditions.

Then when your ready to have some fun, open up the cutout and you have unrestricted flow, just like a open down pipe at the track see. ya... bolt on plate, electric cutout, or custom made boost actuated cutout valve is up to you. Obviously the bolt on plate is the cheapest, but you can't exactly open it once the exhaust is hot, not with wing nuts and bear hands anyway. Nor can you open it while on the move, the electric cutouts work fine, take about 3 seconds to open and close by the flip of a switch. Might even be able to wire it up to the stock A/C switch if your not rocking A/C anymore. OR you can custom make a valve thats controled by a OEM type waste gate actuator... WOT.. hit X boost, cutout opens. ROOOOOOAR.... lift...cutout closes... look around like it wasn't you.


see, cake, and eat it...but keep it, and eat it at the same time, ja?

actually if people ever herd a v8 from factory some dont make noise at all. thats why they make aftermarket free flowing exhaust. less restriction=more sound

Here is the law in VA:

§ 46.2-1049. Exhaust system in good working order.

No person shall drive and no owner of a motor vehicle shall permit or allow the operation of any vehicle on a highway unless it is equipped with an exhaust system of a type installed as standard factory equipment, or comparable to that designed for use on the particular vehicle as standard factory equipment, in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise. An exhaust system shall not be deemed to prevent excessive or unusual noise if it permits the escape of noise in excess of that permitted by the standard factory equipment exhaust system of private passenger motor vehicles or trucks of standard make.

The term "exhaust system," as used in this section, means all the parts of a motor vehicle through which the exhaust passes after leaving the engine block.

Chambered pipes are not an effective muffling device to prevent excessive or unusual noise.

I have 3 other vehicles in VA w/ aftermarket exhaust (1 that has a single tip from factory that I now have quad-tip exhaust) which I never worry about getting tickets in VA for but they can't resist my DSM's fart cannon.

I've been pulled over by Park Police, MPDC, and Montgomery County for my Thermal can. Its F-ing loud. They ask if the CAT's on there and were i'm going but i've been taged for my "no front tag".

My friend has a MINI that has a 2.5 inch straight pipe no cat, tubular mani, its loud as S#!^ he has only been puled over one time.

The cop pulled him over and asked/ said "why the hell is your car so loud, is it broken, why the F is it so loud. Fix that dam thing or you will get ticketed next time" I laughed so hard, that was the first thing the cop said when my friend rolled down the wildow.

When I started laughting I told the cop I say the same thing everytime I ride with him. Its been like that for about a year. I think because its just a 2.5 inch pipe sticking out the back the cops dont know what to think.
