I searched around to see if others had posted up some pictures of my project vehicle here. I did not see any, and thought this probably the correct location for them. (Please feel free to move them if there is a better section.)

Damn, my motor points in the RIGHT direction. :thumb:

I know it is not exactly a DSM, but it is at heart!

See image below for a moreor less finished look at the vehicle. She started up on the first try, and has been running like a top ever since. Still cleaning things up and rifining things. I have not yet begun to tune for power. She still has the stock air box, but otherwise, the breathing has been addressed with larger hard intercooler lines, a great front mount inter cooler, 3" mandrel exhaust system, ported 16G turbo, etc.

I had a great time building up this vehicle, and an even better time driving it. It is fun messing with the occasional Honda on the highway.

The vehicle is designed to be a good multi-purpose vehicle. Planned use was rock crawling, trail running, sand dunes, and street driving. I usually put more focus on the rock crawling side of things, and so far she works great in that area.

I did not know much about fabrication when I started on this project, thus it ttok me a long time, but I did build almost everything on this vehicle myself, only going to friends for some TIG welding where needed. I did buy the custom bellhousing, but will replace it with an adapter plate that I am currently working on.

I have a lot more pictures and notes here:

Jesus H. Christ.

I'm not too knowledgeable about hardcore rock crawling/off road, and think it's kinda wacky, but I'll be damned if I can't appreciate the amount of work that went into that thing...

Impressive!

im just thinking...why put a 4 cylinder into a rock crawler? especially a turbo one?

i mean you need alot alot of torque for a good rockcrawler, and 4 bangers arent especially known for that? its still awesome either way

the thought of the turbo lagging while trying to get over a huge rock made me laugh :D

Yep, it was a lot of work, but i enjoyed the process, and I have a very orginal vehicle as my reward.

The turbo 4 banger is just fine for rock crawling thanks to the low-low gears that I have. For example, I can put the car in firt-low-low and I can then get out of the Samurai and walk around it while it is driving. I can walk along side it just holding the steering wheel while crawling through the rocks if I like. I typically do not get into the turbo while playing in the rocks.

The turbo is used when I am not in the obstacles. It is great fun on typical dirt roads between the obstacles, it is great on the highways and around town, and it will be the monster when in the sand dunes!

Prior to the 4G63 I had installed a VW Jetta motor in there. It was only about 100 HP (CIS) it was OK around town, and crawled well thanks to great low end torque (for a small motor) even though I did not have great gearing then. But in the sand, it was a great! I could go out with friends, and they just could not climb the dunes like I could. The 4G63 should really be impressive in the sand. (If my tires will work in sand..)

-------

That Toyota KE70 should really get up and go. Should be a really nice sleeper if he keeps it looking like stock.

I'm toying with doing a daily driver rear wheel drive swap with another 4G63T. I keep bouncing strange ideas around in my head. I want kind of a sleeper that is light, 2,000 lbs or less. Other times I like the idea of dropping one into a first generation RX7 since there are a lot of cheap RX7, they are a comfortable car that has a fair amount of suspension goodies out on the market. Other times I want to drop a Supra motor into a 240Z. but lets face it, if I could get a good deal on a GN motor or LS1, I'd drop those into the 240Z.

It's fun to dream..

Almost forgot.. Here is a shot of the prototype of the adapter plate. Still refinning the design some. This will mate the 4G63 (and other small pattern Mitsubishi engines) to the Toyota "W" series of transmissions. That includes the Truck, Corolla, Supra, etc. Just about anything RWD from Toyota in the last several years.

Now there's an idea. Drop a 4G63/4 engine into an old MKIII Supra (Both are plentiful) and stick the stock Supra 5 speed RWD tranny on it (which is pretty beefy as is). Motor mounts might not be so fun, but hey, if you could weld them in a Suzuki, why not an old Supra?

Lighter, more power, and more aftermarket.... Hmmm... If only my car wasn't a jack stand queen...

So if I'm not mistaken, that bellhousing is a stock Mitsu piece with an adapter to fit a Toyo tranny correct? Are you planning to market the adapter?

Correct, that is the front of a FWD transaxle case with the adapter plates on the rear of it. (1G or 2G will work) This helps to keep the bellhousing affordable.

Yes, I have had requests to produce some extras for others. I have heard from people that want to build up cars mostly for the drag strip. Some Starion Swaps, Datsun, Mazda and another guy that is building up a Samurai. Should be interesting to see what all results from this. I'm basically selling them for cost.

-Wayne

Damn wayne, you went from a nobody to an extreme tuner in one experiance. And don't listen to the guy about it taking forever people! Most peple have this kind of shit half finished and never running for years. Wayne came in, started it, and was offroading it in no time.

BTW Wayne, crassay upper water pipe! Never noticed that.

Hey Shawn (right?),

That vehicle took me over 2 years to build, but I could have done it much faster if I had a better budget, and actually knew what I was building when I started on it. But no worries, I am very happy with it.

Yep, crazy water pipe. I know how to get rid of that, but not sure it is worth the trouble.

I am currently thinking that I might flip the turbo around, and make a nice O2 housing like Ty had. This would clean up the intake route a lot.

Looks like I'm heading for a slight job change, so mods will happen at a slower pace as I will now have 3 jobs, working 6 days a week plus nights. Yikes!

Nice work. Borrow some paddle tires and take that thing to the Glamis dunes.
A few sleeper cars that I have considered have been the Chevy LUV truck, and the Toyota Celica ST. They both weigh around 2000lbs. and being pre 1975 cars, no DEQ. My sportscar favorite is the Austin Healey 3000, because you can buy full kit cars and here in Oregon they will be registered as an original, again no DEQ.

nice little samurai , you got going there man , EXTREME power for that lil thing.

There is a early 70s 240z with a blown LT1 on the net... forget the address. It's owned by this rich 23 year old guy that's big into trick riding on sports bikes and other craziness. His name is Darius something... I think his website is http://www.darius240z.com

I can't seem to find it right now, but my favorite Z was one with a full Skyline GTR drivetrain.

i have a jeep and i am pretty fimaliar to the rockcrawling scene. i thought about swapping a 4g63t into my jeep for a few reasons. one, fuel injection engines run at crazy angle unlike a carb motor. and 2 its light weight.

which transfer case did you use. is it a stock toyota t-case or was something adapted also.

I have seen the viedo of that 240z. Pretty sweet. Seems to have some trouble putting the power to the ground. :thumb: I think he is located around here somewhere...?

My entire driveline is Toyota truck. I have a Marlin Crawler twin t-case and 5.29 ring and pinions, so gearing is not an issue at all. I can pop the Samurai into first-low-low and get out to lock the hubs while it is driving. Yes, the fuel injection will keep running at just about any angle for most systems. We usually have to tell someone to turn off their engine after a good roll. It sucks though when you are upside down, and your seatbelt will not allow you to reach far enough to turn off the motor... really sounds great as the rods start knocking as there is no oil for the oil pump to pick up.. OMG

-Wayne

yea i would imagine no oil is a not a good thing. what size tires are you running on that thing. i must say, definately one of a kind. great work:thumb:

37" Goodyear MTRs. I'm very happy with them so far.

I drove it a bit last night. Felt good as I have been away from it for about a month.

im trying to get my jeep done. i still have yto do a spring over conversion, i need ring and pinions,

i just mounted my 38.5x15x15 ground hawgs, i need mufflers and cats for iut still. shes getting there. should be cool. not like yours though. you must have a crazy crawl ratio

Of course it is a DSM... it has a 4G63 doesn't it? I think that makes it a DSM. Good job!
-Cory

It is what it is... i'm happy with it, and honestly, that is about all that counts. :D

I really love pulling along side some riced out civic on a freeway on-ramp. suddenly the guy will try to race ahead of me before the 2 lanes merge... I'm sorrym but I just can not let that happen. :thumb:

I need to get some video of this thing on a dirt road. I think you guys will get a real kick out of what it does.
