Hi i have been doing a lot of research as far as cams go for the head i will be building. My current setup is an Evo 3 16g with supporting mods, stock intake manifold, and fp race exhaust manifold. I realize that more aggressive cams like kelford 272's are too much for my current setup because they would push the power band much higher then the efficiency range of my turbo. Also, 264's would be fine on this setup but would not leave much room to grow as i decided to go bigger in the future. I have come to the conclusion that a milder cam such as an HKS 272 or a GSC S1 (268) would be more beneficial for my current setup and any setup i may do in the future. What are your thoughts on the matter because anyone with expertise on these cams would be extremely helpful. I know its not the most in depth description of my setup but if you need any more information please just ask. I feel i have narrowed the cam choices down quite well but if you guys have any better options i am very much open to suggestions thank you.

I have little HKS cams on my car, and it makes over 650 awhp. They do serve a purpose. My redline is 8500, but it pulls untill I have to shift. For your setup, think about what RPM would you need to make power. You should make a useable powerband that has highest power avaerge over a given RPM points . You should build around that, when making a cam selection. If you looked at what other have done on this board. I would tell you not to change the cams at all. In the 1st issues of D-sport David Buschur had some intresting tips on building a fast dsm in stages. My suggestion to you is to use the stock cams. I'd Turn the boost up and max out the turbo. If your motor, can take the pressure and you can have it tuned. I see no reason to upgrade your cams, unless your trying to make max power with lower boost levels. As you increase VE, your tubo is going to come to a point that it wont be able to push more air then what it is limited. Stock cams have been mid 10's on "stock framed" turbo's as a helpful hint. That's my opinion.

The rpm levels i want are from 5-7k and i am building a head and am willing to spend the money on putting in cams so that's why i was thinking HKS 272's or GSC s1's because they fit the rpm range and lift profile i am looking for. I am just curious which you would recommend?

gsc1's or I would tell you to go with hks 264's.

GSC1's or I would tell you to go with HKS 264's if you want to buy cams. With the HKS 272/272, you'd actually loose torgue for your setup. Also for the the aiflow you'd crate it is my opinion, it's to much cam for you. I'm very conservetive and was brouht up to understand the meaning of a cam, is worth alot more then the noise it makes at idle. I'd only sugest the 272/272 if you were running nitrous at your current compression or you were running 10.5 to 1 or higher.

The GSC 1's goes perfect with 16g Turbos.

Personally I'd go with the GSC S1's as well. If the car was drag only the HKS might be a better option but even then I'm not 100% sure. The GSC S1's will much better suite the powerband where that turbo actually makes power. An evoIII isn't a monster in the upper rpms, so why get a cam thats designed to make power in that range? The HKS 272's will probably make less midrange power & torque as well as spool slower. The S1's should have a more aggressive ramp rate & higher lift then the HKS 272's. Peak power might be higher with the HKS 272's but I'm betting the S1's will offer a larger powerband, peak power defently isn't everything.

If that's the case then go GSC S2's. I believe they are cheaper and a little better than Kelford 272's.
S2's FTW!!
